Bu hafta

Son iki haftada geçmişteki yolculuklarımızı Present Perfect, Simple Past ve Past Continuous ile anlattık. Bu hafta yüzümüzü geleceğe çeviriyoruz: yaklaşan bir geziyi be going to, will, Present Continuous ve Simple Present ile planlayacak, should, must, have to gibi kiplerle tavsiye verip kuralları açıklayacak, yabancı bir şehirde yol sorup tarif edecek, ulaşım araçlarını karşılaştırma ve üstünlük sıfatlarıyla kıyaslayacak, sorumlu turizmi konuşacak ve sonunda kendi gezi programımızı ve e-postamızı yazarak Travel temasını tamamlayacağız.

Planning a Trip: Four Ways to Talk About the Future

İngilizcede geleceği anlatmanın tek yolu will değildir; seçtiğimiz yapı, planın ne kadar kesin olduğunu ve ne zaman kararlaştırıldığını gösterir. be going to + V1 önceden karar verilmiş plan ve niyetleri anlatır: “We are going to visit Mardin next summer.” (Gelecek yaz Mardin'i ziyaret edeceğiz; bu kararı çoktan verdik.) Aynı yapı, şu anda gördüğümüz bir kanıta dayanan tahminlerde de kullanılır: “Look at those dark clouds! It's going to rain.”

Saati, yeri ve katılımcıları belli olan, bileti alınmış ya da rezervasyonu yapılmış kesinleşmiş düzenlemeler için Present Continuous tercih edilir: “I'm flying to Van on Friday. I've already booked my ticket.” The ferry to Büyükada leaves at 7.45 a.m.”, “The museum opens at 9 and closes at 5.”

Will + V1 ise konuşma anında verilen ani kararlar, teklifler, sözler ve fikre dayalı tahminler için kullanılır: “Oh no, the bus is late. I'll take a taxi.” (ani karar), “That suitcase looks heavy. I'll carry it for you.” (teklif), “I think you'll love Cappadocia.” (fikir). Tahminlerde will çoğunlukla I think, I'm sure, probably, perhaps ile birlikte gelir. Son olarak önemli bir kural: when, as soon as, before, after, until, if ile başlayan ve geleceği anlatan yan cümlelerde will kullanılmaz, Simple Present kullanılır: “As soon as we arrive at the hotel, we'll call you.”

Travel Advice and Rules: Should, Had Better, Must and Have To

Should ve ought to (-meli, -sa iyi olur) tavsiye bildirir: “You should take a light jacket; evenings can be cool in Cappadocia.”, “You ought to book your hotel early in summer.” Olumsuzu shouldn't, soru biçimi ise “Should I take some cash with me?” We'd better leave now, or we'll miss the last ferry.”

Zorunluluk için must ve have to kullanılır. Must çoğunlukla konuşanın kendi hissettiği zorunluluğu ya da tabela ve duyurulardaki resmî kuralları anlatır: “I must remember my phone charger.”, “Passengers must keep their seatbelts fastened.” Have to ise dışarıdan, bir kurum ya da kural tarafından konan zorunluluğu vurgular: “You have to show your boarding pass at the gate.” Must'ın geçmiş biçimi yoktur; geçmişteki zorunluluklar için had to kullanılır: “Our flight was delayed, so we had to wait for three hours.”

En sık karıştırılan ikili mustn't ile don't have to'dur. Mustn't bir yasak bildirir: “You mustn't smoke on the plane.” (Uçakta sigara içmemelisin; yasak.) Don't have to ise bir şeyin gerekli olmadığını anlatır: “You don't have to print your ticket; you can show it on your phone.” (Bileti yazdırmak zorunda değilsin.) İzin ve yasaklar için can / can't ve be (not) allowed to da kullanılabilir: “You aren't allowed to take large bottles of water in your hand luggage.”

Asking for and Giving Directions in a City

Kısa ve doğrudan kalıplar vardır: “Excuse me, how can I get to the old bazaar?”, “Is there a pharmacy near here?”, “Which way is the bus station?” Could you tell me where the bus station is?”, “Do you know if there is an ATM nearby?” Dolaylı sorularda soru sözcüğünden sonra özne + fiil sırası gelir; yani “where is the station” değil “where the station is” denir. Evet/hayır soruları ise if / whether ile bağlanır.

Yol tarif ederken genellikle emir kipi kullanılır ve adımlar sırayla verilir: go straight ahead / go along this street (düz git / bu cadde boyunca ilerle), turn left / right (sola / sağa dön), take the first / second turning on the left (soldaki ilk / ikinci sokağa sap), go past the bank (bankayı geç), cross the road (karşıya geç), at the traffic lights (trafik ışıklarında), at the end of the street (sokağın sonunda) ve go over the bridge (köprünün üzerinden geç). Toplu taşımada ise take the metro / tram, get on / get off at ... ve change at ... (... durağında aktarma yap) kalıpları kullanılır.

Hedefin yerini tarif etmek için yer edatları devreye girer: next to (yanında), opposite (karşısında), between (arasında), behind (arkasında), in front of (önünde) ve on the corner of (köşesinde). Tarifi mesafe ve güven veren bir ifadeyle bitirmek iyi olur: “It's about a five-minute walk.”, “You can't miss it.” (Gözünüzden kaçmaz.) Kısa bir diyalog: “A: Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the clock tower? — B: Sure. Go straight along this street and take the second turning on the right. The clock tower is opposite the post office. It's about ten minutes on foot.”

Comparing Means of Transport: Comparatives and Superlatives

İki şeyi kıyaslarken comparative (karşılaştırma) biçimi ve than kullanılır. Tek heceli sıfatlar -er alır: fast → faster, cheap → cheaper. Ünsüz + y ile biten sıfatlarda y, i'ye dönüşür: easy → easier, noisy → noisier. İki veya daha çok heceli sıfatlar more alır: comfortable → more comfortable, expensive → more expensive: “The high-speed train is faster than the coach, but it is more expensive.”

Bir grubun içinde en uç noktadakini belirtmek için superlative (üstünlük) biçimi kullanılır ve önüne mutlaka the gelir: the fastest, the cheapest, the most comfortable, the most eco-friendly. Ardından çoğunlukla in (bir yer/grup) veya of (seçenekler) gelir: “The plane is the fastest of all, but it is the most expensive option.” Düzensiz sıfatlara dikkat: good → better → the best, bad → worse → the worst, far → farther / further → the farthest / the furthest. “Travelling by bicycle is the best way to see the island.”

Eşitlik için as + sıfat + as, eşitsizlik için not as + sıfat + as kalıbı kullanılır: “The bus is as comfortable as the train.”, “The ferry isn't as fast as the plane.” (Vapur uçak kadar hızlı değildir.) Farkın büyüklüğünü göstermek için karşılaştırma sıfatının önüne much / a lot / far (çok daha) veya a bit / slightly (biraz daha) getirilir: “The plane is much faster than the coach.”, “The train is a bit cheaper than the plane.” Burada very kullanılmaz: “very faster” yanlıştır.

Responsible and Sustainable Tourism

You should use public transport or a bicycle instead of renting a car.”, “Try to buy souvenirs from local craftspeople.”, “Avoid using plastic bottles; take a reusable one.”, “You mustn't feed wild animals or pick flowers in national parks.” Burada instead of ve avoid kalıplarından sonra fiilin -ing aldığına dikkat edin: instead of flying, avoid wasting.

Ziyaret ettiğimiz yerin local customs (yerel gelenekler) bilgisine saygı göstermek, ibadet yerlerinde uygun giyinmek, insanların fotoğrafını çekmeden önce izin istemek ve yerel dilde birkaç kelime öğrenmek bu saygının parçasıdır: “You'd better ask before you take a photo of someone.” Kapadokya'daki peribacaları, Pamukkale travertenleri, Efes ve Göbeklitepe gibi UNESCO Dünya Mirası Listesi'ndeki alanlarda belirlenmiş yürüyüş yollarının dışına çıkmamak da bu mirasın gelecek kuşaklara aktarılmasına katkıda bulunur. Kısaca ilke şudur: “Take only photos, leave only footprints.” (Yalnızca fotoğraf al, yalnızca ayak izi bırak.)

Don't (Yapma)Do Instead (Bunun Yerine)Why? (Neden?)
Don't leave litter on the beach.Take your rubbish with you or use the bins.Litter harms sea animals and pollutes nature.
Don't take short flights for short distances.Take the train or the bus instead of flying. It reduces your carbon footprint.
Don't buy cheap souvenirs made in factories far away.Buy handmade goods from local craftspeople.Your money supports the local community.
Don't walk off the marked paths at heritage sites.Stay on the paths and follow the rules.Fragile ancient sites can be damaged.
Don't leave the lights and air conditioning on.Switch them off when you leave your hotel room.It saves energy and water.
Responsible Tourism: Take Only Photos, Leave Only FootprintsDO ✔ (Yap)✔ Use public transport or a bicycle.✔ Buy from local craftspeople.✔ Carry a reusable water bottle.✔ Respect local customs and dress codes.✔ Stay on the marked paths.DON'T ✘ (Yapma)✘ Don't leave litter on beaches or trails.✘ Don't feed or disturb wild animals.✘ Don't touch or write on ancient walls.✘ Don't waste water and energy.✘ Don't take photos of people without asking.ECOInstead of + V-ing | Avoid + V-ing | Try to + V1 | You mustn't + V1

Writing a Travel Itinerary and an Email About Travel Plans

Travel temasını, bu hafta öğrendiğimiz tüm yapıları kullanacağımız iki yazma türüyle tamamlıyoruz. Bunlardan ilki itinerary (gezi programı)dir. Gezi programı gün gün düzenlenir ve her gün genellikle morning, afternoon, evening bölümlerine ayrılır. Programlanmış etkinlikler Present Continuous ya da be going to ile, sabit saatler ise Simple Present ile yazılır: “Day 1 – Gaziantep. Our bus arrives at 9 a.m. In the morning, we're visiting the Zeugma Mosaic Museum. In the afternoon, we're going to explore the old copper bazaar.” Programlarda kısa ve maddeli bir dil tercih edilebilir: “8.00 – Breakfast at the hotel”.

I'm writing to tell you about our trip to İzmir.”), planların ve düzenlemelerin anlatıldığı body (“We're arriving on Saturday morning. We're going to visit Ephesus on Sunday.”), arkadaşa yöneltilen bir question / request (“Could you recommend a good place for dinner?”) ve samimi bir closing (“I can't wait to see you! / Looking forward to hearing from you. / Best wishes, Deniz”).

You should bring a hat because it's going to be hot. You don't have to bring a towel; we have plenty. When you get off the metro, turn left and our house is opposite the bakery.” Ulaşım seçeneklerini karşılaştırmak da yararlıdır: “The metro is cheaper than a taxi and it's much faster in the rush hour.” Looking forward to kalıbından sonra fiilin -ing aldığını unutmayın: “I'm looking forward to seeing you.” (“to see you” değil).

Örnekler

  1. Örnek 1Parantez içindeki fiilleri uygun gelecek zaman yapısıyla tamamlayınız: a) I ............ (fly) to Erzurum on Saturday. I've already got my ticket. b) A: I'm thirsty. — B: Wait, I ............ (get) you some water. c) We ............ (visit) our grandparents in Rize next summer. We decided it last month.

    Cevabı göster

    1. adım: a) cümlesinde bilet alınmış, gün belli; bu kesinleşmiş bir düzenlemedir → Present Continuous: I'm flying to Erzurum on Saturday. 2. adım: b) cümlesinde B kararını konuşma anında veriyor ve bir teklifte bulunuyor → will: I'll get you some water. 3. adım: c) cümlesinde karar önceden verilmiş bir plan/niyettir → be going to: We're going to visit our grandparents in Rize next summer. Not: a) cümlesinde be going to da dilbilgisi açısından yanlış sayılmaz; ancak bilet ve gün belli olduğu için en doğal seçim Present Continuous'tır.

  2. Örnek 2Hatalı cümleleri düzeltiniz: a) When we will arrive in Bodrum, we will go straight to the beach. b) The ferry is leaving at 6.30 every morning.

    Cevabı göster

    1. adım: a) cümlesinde when ile başlayan yan cümle geleceği anlatıyor. Zaman yan cümlelerinde will kullanılmaz, Simple Present kullanılır. Doğrusu: “When we arrive in Bodrum, we will go straight to the beach.” 2. adım: b) cümlesi düzenli bir tarifeyi (every morning) anlatıyor. Tarifeler Simple Present ile ifade edilir. Doğrusu: “The ferry leaves at 6.30 every morning.” 3. adım: Kontrol: yan cümlede arrive (Simple Present), ana cümlede will go; tarifede leaves (üçüncü tekil şahıs -s eki).

  3. Örnek 3Müze girişindeki kuralları uygun kiplerle cümleye dönüştürünüz (must / have to, mustn't, don't have to, should): 1. Bilet almak zorunlu. 2. Eserlere dokunmak yasak. 3. Öğrencilerin ücret ödemesine gerek yok. 4. Rahat ayakkabı giymeniz tavsiye edilir.

    Cevabı göster

    1. adım: Zorunluluk → must / have to: “Visitors must buy a ticket.” veya “Visitors have to buy a ticket.” 2. adım: Yasak → mustn't: “You mustn't touch the exhibits.” 3. adım: Gereksizlik → don't have to: “Students don't have to pay.” 4. adım: Tavsiye → should: “You should wear comfortable shoes.” Dikkat: 3. maddede mustn't kullanmak anlamı tamamen değiştirirdi (öğrencilerin ödeme yapması yasak olurdu).

  4. Örnek 4Aşağıdaki doğrudan soruları kibar dolaylı sorulara dönüştürünüz: a) Where is the nearest tram stop? b) What time does the castle close? c) Is the bazaar far from here?

    Cevabı göster

    1. adım: Dolaylı soruya Could you tell me...? veya Do you know...? ile başlanır; ardından soru sözcüğü + özne + fiil sırası gelir. a) “Could you tell me where the nearest tram stop is?” (is sona geçer.) 2. adım: b) cümlesinde yardımcı fiil does düşer ve fiil özneye göre çekimlenir: “Do you know what time the castle closes?” 3. adım: c) evet/hayır sorusu olduğu için if / whether kullanılır: “Do you know if the bazaar is far from here?”

  5. Örnek 5Bilgileri kullanarak üç karşılaştırma cümlesi yazınız: İzmir'den Selçuk'a — Taxi: 50 minutes, expensive | Train: 75 minutes, cheap | Bus: 75 minutes, cheap

    Cevabı göster

    1. adım: Hız karşılaştırması: taksi treninkinden daha kısa sürüyor → comparative: “The taxi is faster than the train.” 2. adım: Eşitlik: tren ve otobüs aynı süre ve benzer fiyatta → as ... as: “The train is as cheap as the bus.” veya “The bus is as fast as the train.” 3. adım: Üstünlük: üç seçenek arasında en pahalısı taksi → superlative: “The taxi is the most expensive of the three options.” Ek örnek (eşitsizlik): “The bus isn't as fast as the taxi.”

  6. Örnek 6Aşağıdaki e-posta bölümlerini doğru sıraya koyunuz ve her birinin işlevini yazınız: (a) Could you tell me what the weather is like there in May? (b) Hi Sophie, (c) I can't wait to see you! Love, Zeynep (d) I'm writing to tell you about my trip to Cappadocia. We're flying to Kayseri on 3 May and we're going to stay in a cave hotel.

    Cevabı göster

    1. adım: E-posta selamlama ile başlar → (b) Hi Sophie, 2. adım: Ardından yazma amacı ve planlar gelir → (d); burada Present Continuous (We're flying, kesin düzenleme) ve be going to (we're going to stay, plan) kullanılmıştır. 3. adım: Planlardan sonra arkadaştan bilgi isteyen soru gelir → (a); dolaylı soru düzeni (what the weather is like) doğru kullanılmıştır. Doğru sıra: b – d – a – c.

Kısaca

  • Gelecek zaman seçimi: Önceden kararlaştırılmış planlar be going to, bileti ve saati belli düzenlemeler Present Continuous, konuşma anındaki kararlar ve teklifler will, tarifeler ise Simple Present ile anlatılır: “The ferry leaves at 7.45.”
  • Zaman yan cümleleri: when, as soon as, before, after, until, if ile başlayan gelecek anlamlı yan cümlelerde will değil Simple Present kullanılır: “As soon as we arrive, we'll call you.”
  • Tavsiye ve kural kipleri: should / ought to tavsiye, had better uyarı içeren güçlü tavsiye, must / have to zorunluluk, mustn't yasak, don't have to ise gereksizlik bildirir.
  • Yol sorma ve tarif: Kibar sorularda dolaylı soru düzeni kullanılır: “Could you tell me where the station is?”; tarifte go straight ahead, take the second turning on the left, go past, opposite, on the corner of gibi kalıplar yer alır.
  • Ulaşım karşılaştırma: Kısa sıfatlar -er / the -est, uzun sıfatlar more / the most alır; eşitlik as ... as, eşitsizlik not as ... as, farkın büyüklüğü much / a bit ile gösterilir.
