Grab the remote control and let's start!

TV Vocabulary: Types of TV Programs and Television Words

Örnekler: 'I hate commercials, so I change the channel with the remote control.' (Reklamlardan hoşlanmam, bu yüzden kumandayla kanalı değiştiririm.) 'My favorite actor appears in a new series this year.' 'The director of this documentary is very famous.' (Bu belgeselin yönetmeni çok ünlü.)

Describing What People Do Regularly: TV Habits and Frequency

I always watch football matches at weekends.' (Hafta sonları her zaman futbol maçı izlerim.) 'We usually watch a quiz show after dinner.' 'My brother never watches soap operas.' (Erkek kardeşim asla pembe dizi izlemez.)

Özne he / she / it ya da tek bir kişi (Ali, my mother) olduğunda fiile -s / -es eklenir: watch → watches, enjoy → enjoys, miss → misses, like → likes. Sıklığı daha net belirtmek için cümle sonuna zaman ifadeleri (time expressions) eklenir: every day / every evening (her gün / her akşam), at weekends (hafta sonları), on Sundays (pazar günleri), once a week (haftada bir), twice a week (haftada iki kez), three times a week (haftada üç kez). Birine bu konuda soru sormak için 'How often do you watch TV?' veya 'How often does she watch the news?' kalıbı kullanılır; cevap olarak 'I watch TV every evening.' ya da 'She rarely watches the news.' denebilir.

I can't wait for it!' (Onu dört gözle bekliyorum! / Sabırsızlanıyorum!) deriz. can't wait for kalıbından sonra isim veya zamir, can't wait to kalıbından sonra ise yalın fiil gelir: 'The final episode is on Friday. I can't wait for it!' (Final bölümü cuma günü. Sabırsızlanıyorum!) / 'I can't wait to watch the match on Saturday.' (Cumartesi maçı izlemek için sabırsızlanıyorum.)

Expressing Preferences: Prefer ... to ... and Favorite Programs

İki şeyden birini diğerine tercih ettiğimizi söylemek (expressing preferences) için prefer A to B (A'yı B'ye tercih etmek) yapısı kullanılır. I prefer movies to TV series.' (Filmleri dizilere tercih ederim.) Özne he / she olduğunda fiil üçüncü tekil şahıs takısı alarak prefers olur: 'She prefers talk shows to reality shows.' (O, sohbet programlarını realite programlarına tercih eder.)

Tercih edilen şey bir eylemse fiiller -ing alır: prefer + V-ing + to + V-ing. Örnek: 'I prefer watching documentaries to playing computer games.' (Belgesel izlemeyi bilgisayar oyunu oynamaya tercih ederim.) Aynı anlamı like ... more than ... kalıbıyla da verebiliriz: 'I like sitcoms more than soap operas.' = 'I prefer sitcoms to soap operas.' En sevdiğimiz programı belirtmek için ise 'My favorite TV program is ...' kalıbını kullanırız ve sebebini ekleriz: 'My favorite TV program is a quiz show called Brain Race because I love answering questions.'

Başkalarının tercihlerini sormak (asking about preferences) için 'Which do you prefer, cartoons or sitcoms?' (Hangisini tercih edersin, çizgi film mi durum komedisi mi?), 'Do you prefer the news to sports programs?', 'What is your favorite TV program / channel?' ve 'What kind of TV programs do you like?' sorularını kullanırız. Üçüncü tekil şahısta yardımcı fiil does olur ve prefer yalın kalır: 'Does Elif prefer quiz shows to talk shows?' — 'Yes, she does.' / 'No, she doesn't. She prefers talk shows.'

Stating Personal Opinions: Adjectives, I Think and But

Kişisel görüş bildirmek (stating personal opinions) için I think ... (Bence / Sanırım), In my opinion ... (Bana göre), I believe ... (İnanıyorum ki) ve For me ...

İki zıt görüşü tek cümlede birleştirmek için but (ama, fakat) bağlacını kullanırız: 'Talk shows are usually amusing, but I think reality shows are pretty boring.' (Sohbet programları genellikle eğlendiricidir ama bence realite programları oldukça sıkıcı.) Görüşümüzü because ile gerekçelendirirsek konuşmamız daha ikna edici olur: 'I think documentaries are educational because I learn new facts about animals.'

Sıfatlarda -ing / -ed farkına dikkat edelim: Programın kendisi boring, interesting, exciting (sıkıcı, ilginç, heyecan verici) olur; programı izleyen kişi ise bored, interested, excited (sıkılmış, ilgilenen, heyecanlanmış) olur: 'The soap opera is boring, so I feel bored.' (Pembe dizi sıkıcı, bu yüzden sıkılıyorum.) Arkadaşımızın görüşüne katılıyorsak 'I agree.' / 'Me too.', katılmıyorsak kibarca 'I don't think so.' / 'I disagree.' diyebiliriz.

Talking About Past Events: Did You Watch It Last Night?

Dün akşam izlediğimiz bir programdan söz ederken (talking about past events) Simple Past Tense kullanırız. Düzenli fiiller -ed takısı alır: watch → watched, enjoy → enjoyed, like → liked, laugh → laughed, miss → missed, start → started, appear → appeared. Düzensiz fiillerin ise ikinci hâli ezberlenir: see → saw, be → was / were, win → won, begin → began, have → had. Örnek: 'I watched the wildlife documentary last night, and it was fantastic.' (Dün gece yaban hayatı belgeselini izledim ve harikaydı.)

Geçmişle ilgili soru sorarken Did + özne + V1 (yalın fiil) yapısı kullanılır; geçmiş anlamını did taşıdığı için fiil ikinci hâline girmez: 'Did you watch the wildlife documentary last night?' Kısa cevaplar 'Yes, I did.' veya 'No, I didn't.' şeklindedir. Olumsuz cümlede de didn't + V1 gelir: 'I didn't watch the match because I had a lot of homework.' Daha fazla bilgi almak için 'What did you watch yesterday?' (Dün ne izledin?), 'How was it?' (Nasıldı?) ve 'Who appeared on the talk show?' (Sohbet programına kim çıktı?) soruları sorulabilir.

Geçmiş zaman ifadeleri genellikle cümle sonunda yer alır: last night (dün gece), yesterday (dün), last week / last Saturday (geçen hafta / geçen cumartesi), two days ago (iki gün önce). İzlediğimiz programı tanıtırken was / were ile bir sıfat kullanırız: 'The final episode was really exciting.' (Final bölümü gerçekten heyecan vericiydi.), 'The commercials were too long.' (Reklamlar çok uzundu.), 'A famous singer appeared on the talk show yesterday.' (Dün sohbet programına ünlü bir şarkıcı çıktı.)

Reading a TV Guide and Writing About TV Habits

Haftanın okuma çalışmalarında TV guide (yayın akışı) okumak çok işe yarar. Bir yayın akışında programın channel (kanalı), time (yayın saati) ve type (türü) yazar: 'Channel 5 — 20:00 — Brain Race (quiz show)'. Okurken 'What time does the documentary start?' (Belgesel saat kaçta başlıyor?) ya da 'Which channel shows the news at 7 p.m.?' Programlar ve yayın saatleri gibi düzenli zaman çizelgeleri için de Simple Present Tense kullanılır: 'The news starts at 7 p.m. and finishes at 8 p.m.'

Televizyon alışkanlıklarımızı anlatan kısa bir paragraf (a short piece about TV habits) yazarken dört adımı izleyebiliriz: (1) Rutin — ne zaman ve ne sıklıkla izlediğimiz (sıklık zarfları), (2) Tercih — prefer ... to ... ve en sevdiğimiz program, (3) Görüş — I think ... but ... ile sıfatlar, (4) Geçmiş deneyim ve tavsiye — dün ne izlediğimiz ve recommend fiiliyle arkadaşlarımıza öneri. and, but, because, so bağlaçları cümleleri birbirine bağlar ve yazımızı akıcı hâle getirir.

Örnek paragraf: 'I usually watch TV for an hour after dinner, but I never watch TV before school. I prefer documentaries to soap operas because they are educational. My favorite TV program is a nature documentary on Channel 3. I think talk shows are sometimes amusing, but reality shows are pretty boring. Last night I watched a documentary about penguins, and it was fantastic. I recommend it to all my friends!' Bu paragrafta haftanın dört işlevinin (rutin, tercih, görüş, geçmiş olay) tamamı bir arada kullanılmıştır.
