Bu hafta

Welcome back to Unit 5: Television! Last week we learned the types of TV programs and the basic patterns. This week we go one step further: we use the TV with the right collocations (turn on, change the channel, miss an episode), we report our family's TV routines, we compare programs with comparatives and superlatives, we ask for opinions and recommend programs, we tell the story of an episode in the past, and finally we read and write a TV review. Ready? Let's switch on!

TV Collocations: Turn On, Change the Channel, Miss an Episode

İngilizcede bazı kelimeler belli fiillerle birlikte kullanılır; bunlara collocation (eşdizim, kalıp söz) denir. Televizyonla ilgili en sık kullanılan kalıplar şunlardır: watch TV (televizyon izlemek), turn on / switch on the TV (televizyonu açmak), turn off / switch off the TV (televizyonu kapatmak), turn up the volume (sesi açmak, yükseltmek), turn down the volume (sesi kısmak) ve change the channel (kanalı değiştirmek). Türkçede 'televizyonu açmak' dediğimiz için open the TV demek yanlış olur; doğrusu 'Can you turn on the TV, please?' (Televizyonu açar mısın lütfen?) şeklindedir.

Programlarla ilgili kalıplar da önemlidir: miss an episode (bir bölümü kaçırmak), record a program (bir programı kaydetmek), the first / the last episode (ilk / son bölüm), a new season (yeni sezon), a live broadcast (canlı yayın) ve be on (yayında olmak). Örnekler: 'I never miss an episode of my favorite series.' (En sevdiğim dizinin hiçbir bölümünü kaçırmam.) 'What's on TV tonight?' — 'A wildlife documentary is on at 9 p.m.' (Bu akşam televizyonda ne var? — Saat 9'da bir yaban hayatı belgeseli var.) 'The match is live, so I can't wait for it!' (Maç canlı yayınlanacak, sabırsızlanıyorum!)

Televizyon dünyasındaki insanların adlarını da bilmeliyiz: presenter / host (sunucu), guest (konuk), contestant (yarışmacı), audience (stüdyo seyircisi), viewers (ekran başındaki izleyiciler), actor / actress (erkek / kadın oyuncu) ve director (yönetmen). appear fiili kişinin ekranda yer aldığını anlatır: bir programa çıkmak için appear on a talk show, bir dizide oynamak için appear in a series denir: 'A famous chef appeared on the talk show.' (Ünlü bir aşçı sohbet programına çıktı.)

Family TV Routines: Asking and Telling Who Watches What

Örnekler: 'My father always watches the news at 8 p.m.' (Babam saat 8'de her zaman haberleri izler.) 'My grandmother usually watches soap operas in the afternoon.' (Babaannem öğleden sonraları genellikle pembe dizi izler.) 'My little brother sometimes watches cartoons after school.' (Küçük kardeşim okuldan sonra bazen çizgi film izler.)

Bir TV survey (televizyon anketi) yaparken soru kelimeleriyle bilgi toplarız: 'What kind of programs does your mother watch?' (Annen ne tür programlar izler?), 'How often does she watch them?' (Onları ne sıklıkla izler?), 'When / What time does she watch them?' (Ne zaman / Saat kaçta izler?) ve 'Which channel does she prefer?' (Hangi kanalı tercih eder?). Evet-hayır sorularında ever (hiç) kelimesi kullanılabilir: 'Do you ever watch reality shows?' (Hiç realite programı izler misin?) — 'Yes, sometimes.' / 'No, never.' Üçüncü tekil şahısta: 'Does your dad ever watch cartoons?' — 'No, he doesn't. He never watches them.'

Sıklık zarfları olumsuz cümlelerde don't / doesn't ile asıl fiil arasına girer: 'I don't usually watch TV on school days.' (Okul günlerinde genellikle televizyon izlemem.) 'She doesn't often watch the news.' (Haberleri pek sık izlemez.) never kelimesi zaten olumsuz anlam taşıdığı için don't ile birlikte kullanılmaz. Anket sonuçlarını raporlarken and ile benzer, but ile farklı bilgileri bağlarız: 'My mom often watches cooking shows, but my dad never watches them.'

Comparing TV Programs: Comparatives, Superlatives and Reasons

Geçen hafta prefer A to B kalıbıyla tercih bildirdik. Bu hafta tercihimizin sebebini karşılaştırma yaparak açıklıyoruz. İki programı karşılaştırırken comparative (karşılaştırma) sıfatları ve than kullanılır. Kısa sıfatlar -er alır: funny → funnier, short → shorter, long → longer, scary → scarier. Uzun sıfatların önüne more gelir: boring → more boring, exciting → more exciting, educational → more educational, interesting → more interesting. Örnek: 'I prefer sitcoms to soap operas because they are funnier and shorter.' (Durum komedilerini pembe dizilere tercih ederim çünkü daha komik ve daha kısalar.)

Bir programı tüm diğerleriyle karşılaştırıp 'en' demek için superlative (üstünlük) sıfatları kullanılır: kısa sıfatlarda the + -est (the funniest, the longest), uzun sıfatlarda the most (the most exciting, the most educational). Bazı sıfatlar düzensizdir: good → better → the best (iyi, daha iyi, en iyi) ve bad → worse → the worst (kötü, daha kötü, en kötü). Örnek: 'My favorite TV program is Brain Race. I think it is the most educational quiz show on TV.' (En sevdiğim program Brain Race. Bence televizyondaki en eğitici bilgi yarışması.)

İki şeyin eşit olduğunu söylemek için as + sıfat + as, eşit olmadığını söylemek için not as + sıfat + as kullanılır: 'The news is as informative as documentaries.' (Haberler belgeseller kadar bilgilendiricidir.) 'Reality shows are not as interesting as quiz shows.' (Realite programları bilgi yarışmaları kadar ilginç değildir.) Böylece tercih, görüş ve karşılaştırmayı tek cümlede toplayabiliriz: 'She prefers talk shows to the news because she thinks they are more amusing.'

Asking for Opinions and Recommending TV Programs

Bir tartışmada (discussion) yalnız kendi görüşümüzü söylemek yetmez; karşımızdakinin görüşünü de sormalıyız (asking for opinions). Bunun için şu soruları kullanırız: 'What do you think about reality shows?' (Realite programları hakkında ne düşünüyorsun?), 'How do you find this series?' (Bu diziyi nasıl buluyorsun?), 'Do you like quiz shows?' (Bilgi yarışmalarını sever misin?) ve 'Why do you like documentaries?' (Belgeselleri neden seviyorsun?). Cevaplar görüş kalıbıyla başlar ve because (çünkü) ile gerekçelendirilir: 'I think they are educational because I learn new facts about animals.'

Bir sonucu ifade etmek için so (bu yüzden) kullanılır; because sebebi, so sonucu gösterir: 'The talk show was boring, so I changed the channel.' (Sohbet programı sıkıcıydı, bu yüzden kanalı değiştirdim.) 'I like football, so I always watch the matches at weekends.' Karşımızdakinin görüşünü daha çok merak ediyorsak 'Really? Why?' (Gerçekten mi? Neden?) ya da 'What about you?' (Ya sen?) diye sorabiliriz. Bu ifadeler konuşmayı canlı tutar.

Arkadaşımıza bir program önerirken (recommending) farklı kalıplar kullanabiliriz: 'You should watch it.' (Onu izlemelisin.), 'I recommend this documentary.' (Bu belgeseli tavsiye ederim.), 'I recommend watching it with your family.' (Ailenle izlemeni tavsiye ederim.), 'Don't miss it!' (Sakın kaçırma!) ve 'It's worth watching.' (İzlemeye değer.). Bir programı önermiyorsak: 'You shouldn't watch it. It's too violent.' (Onu izlememelisin. Çok şiddet içeriyor.) Öneri yaparken programın adını, kanalını ve saatini de söylemek yararlıdır: 'Watch Animal Planet Kids on Channel 3 at 6 p.m. Don't miss it!'

Telling a TV Story in the Past: Wh- Questions and Sequencing

Geçen hafta 'Did you watch ... last night?' gibi evet-hayır sorularını öğrendik. Bu hafta geçmişteki bir program hakkında ayrıntılı bilgi almak için Wh- soruları kullanıyoruz: Wh- word + did + subject + V1? Örnekler: 'What did you watch last night?' (Dün gece ne izledin?), 'When did the match start?' (Maç ne zaman başladı?), 'Where did you watch it?' (Onu nerede izledin?), 'Who did you watch it with?' (Onu kiminle izledin?). Programın nasıl olduğunu sormak için was / were kullanılır: 'How was the episode?' — 'It was fantastic.', 'Were the commercials long?' — 'Yes, they were.'

Önemli bir ayrıntı: Who sorusu öznenin kim olduğunu soruyorsa did kullanılmaz ve fiil V2 hâlinde kalır: 'Who appeared on the talk show?' — 'A famous singer appeared on it.' (Sohbet programına kim çıktı? — Ünlü bir şarkıcı çıktı.) 'Who won the quiz show?' — 'A young teacher won it.' Buna karşılık 'Who did you watch it with?' sorusunda 'you' öznedir, bu yüzden did gerekir. Geçmiş anlatımda sık kullanılan düzensiz fiiller: begin → began, win → won, lose → lost, tell → told, make → made, find → found, think → thought, go → went, come → came.

Bir bölümün hikâyesini anlatırken olayları sıraya koymak için sequencing words (sıralama kelimeleri) kullanırız: First (ilk olarak), Then (sonra), After that (ondan sonra), Finally (son olarak). Örnek: 'Last night I watched a quiz show. First, the host introduced the contestants. Then, he asked difficult questions. After that, a young teacher won the first round. Finally, she won the big prize. It was really exciting!' Ortamı anlatmak için there was / there were da kullanılabilir: 'There were four contestants on the show.' (Programda dört yarışmacı vardı.)

Reading TV Reviews and Survey Results, Writing a Review

Review (eleştiri, değerlendirme yazısı), bir programı izleyen kişinin onu tanıttığı ve hakkındaki görüşünü yazdığı kısa metindir. İyi bir review dört bölümden oluşur: (1) Program bilgisi — adı, türü, kanalı ve saati, (2) Konu — programın neyi anlattığı (Simple Present: 'It is about a family of penguins.'), (3) Görüş ve deneyim — izlerken neler olduğu ve nasıl bulduğumuz (Simple Past ve sıfatlar: 'I watched it last Sunday, and it was amazing.'), (4) Tavsiye ve puan — öneri ve yıldız ('I recommend it. 5 stars!'). Bir review okurken önce ana fikri (main idea), sonra ayrıntıları (details) buluruz.

Örnek review: 'Ice World is a nature documentary on Channel 3. It is on every Sunday at 7 p.m. It is about a family of penguins in Antarctica. I watched the first episode last Sunday with my parents. First, we saw the penguins on the ice. Then, the baby penguins learned to swim. The music was beautiful, and the camera work was excellent. I think it is more educational than most cartoons, and it is never boring. I recommend it to all families. Don't miss it! ★★★★★' Bu metinde haftanın tüm yapıları bir aradadır: düzenli yayın (Simple Present), izleme deneyimi (Simple Past), sıralama (First, Then), karşılaştırma (more educational than) ve tavsiye.

Okuma ve yazma çalışmalarında anket sonuçlarını (survey results) da yorumlarız. Sonuçları anlatırken şu kelimeler işe yarar: most students (öğrencilerin çoğu), some students (bazı öğrenciler), only one student (yalnızca bir öğrenci), no students (hiçbir öğrenci). Örnek: 26 öğrencilik 7/A sınıfında 8 öğrenci çizgi filmi, 1 öğrenci haberleri tercih ediyorsa 'Cartoons are the most popular program type in 7/A. Only one student prefers the news.' deriz. Sayıları karşılaştırırken 'Seven more students prefer cartoons than the news.' (Çizgi filmi haberlere göre yedi öğrenci daha fazla tercih ediyor.) gibi cümleler kurabiliriz.
