Bu hafta

Welcome to the third week of Unit 5: Television! We already know the TV program types, the TV collocations and how to compare and recommend programs. This week we look behind the screen and learn who makes a program, we talk about our feelings and excitement (I can't wait for it!), we make our opinions stronger with intensifiers like pretty and really, we say what we didn't watch last night, we discuss screen time and finally we write an email to a friend about our TV week. Let's start!

TV Words in Focus: Plurals, the News and Who Makes a Program

Kelimelerin çoğu sonuna -s alır: channel → channels (kanallar), commercial → commercials (reklamlar), director → directors (yönetmenler), discussion → discussions (tartışma programları), sitcom → sitcoms, quiz show → quiz shows, remote control → remote controls (kumandalar). Sessiz harf + y ile biten kelimelerde y düşer ve -ies gelir: documentary → documentaries (belgeseller), comedy → comedies (komediler). Ünlü harf + y ile bitenlerde ise yalnız -s eklenir: play → plays, day → days.

İki kelime özel davranır. series (dizi) kelimesinin tekili ve çoğulu aynıdır: 'This series is very popular.' (Bu dizi çok popüler.) 'There are three new series on Channel 2 this season.' The news is on at 7 p.m.' (Haberler saat 7'de.) 'The news was very sad yesterday.' (Dün haberler çok üzücüydü.) 'a news' ya da 'two news' denmez; tek bir haber için a piece of news kullanılabilir.

Peki bir program ekrana nasıl gelir? Önce script writer (senarist) senaryoyu yazar (writes the script). director (yönetmen) çekimi yönetir ve oyunculara ne yapacaklarını söyler (tells the actors what to do). actors / actresses rol yapar, presenter sunuculuk yapar. camera operator (kameraman) sahneleri çeker (films the scenes), editor (kurgucu) bölümü kurgular (edits the episode) ve sonunda channel (kanal) programı yayınlar (broadcasts it). Meslekleri anlatırken Simple Present kullanırız: 'What does a camera operator do?' — 'He / She films the scenes.'

Talking About Excitement and Feelings: I Can't Wait for It

I can't wait kalıbını kullanırız. Arkasından bir isim ya da zamir geliyorsa for, bir fiil geliyorsa to + V1 kullanılır: 'The final episode is on tonight. I can't wait for it!' (Final bölümü bu akşam. Sabırsızlanıyorum!) 'I can't wait for the match on Saturday.' 'I can't wait to watch the new season.' (Yeni sezonu izlemek için sabırsızlanıyorum.) Üçüncü tekil şahısta da aynı biçim kullanılır: 'My brother can't wait for the cartoon.'

Duygularımızı anlatmanın başka yolları da vardır: be excited about (bir şey için heyecanlı olmak), be a big fan of (büyük hayranı olmak), be crazy about (bayılmak, deli olmak), be interested in (ilgilenmek) ve be bored with (sıkılmış olmak). Örnekler: 'I am a big fan of nature documentaries.' 'My sister is interested in cooking shows.' like, love, enjoy, hate ve don't mind fiillerinden sonra ikinci bir fiil gelirse genellikle V-ing kullanılır: 'I enjoy watching quiz shows.' (Bilgi yarışması izlemekten hoşlanırım.) 'She hates watching the news.' 'I don't mind watching cartoons with my little brother.'

'The documentary was interesting. I was very interested in it.' (Belgesel ilginçti. Onunla çok ilgilendim.) 'The horror series is frightening, so my sister is frightened.' (Korku dizisi korkutucu, bu yüzden kız kardeşim korkmuş.) 'The talk show was amusing. We were amused.' Bu yüzden 'I am boring' demek 'Ben sıkıcı biriyim' anlamına gelir; sıkıldığımızı söylemek için 'I am bored' demeliyiz.

Strengthening Opinions: Intensifiers, Agreeing and Disagreeing

Planımızdaki örnek cümleye bakalım: 'Talk shows are usually amusing, but I think reality shows are pretty boring.' (Sohbet programları genellikle eğlencelidir ama bence realite programları epey sıkıcı.) Burada but iki zıt görüşü bağlar, pretty ise sıkıcılık derecesini artırır. a bit çoğunlukla olumsuz sıfatlarla kullanılır: 'The episode was a bit long.'

too kelimesi very ile aynı şey değildir. very yalnızca dereceyi artırır; too ise 'gereğinden fazla, kabul edilemeyecek kadar' anlamı taşır ve genellikle olumsuz bir sonuç bildirir: 'The film is very long, but I love it.' (Film çok uzun ama ona bayılıyorum.) 'The film is too long, so I don't want to watch it.' (Film fazla uzun, bu yüzden izlemek istemiyorum.) Yetersizliği anlatmak için de not + sıfat + enough kullanılır: 'The jokes weren't funny enough.' (Şakalar yeterince komik değildi.)

Bir tartışmada arkadaşımızın görüşüne katılıyorsak (agreeing) 'I agree with you.' (Sana katılıyorum.), 'You're right.' (Haklısın.) ya da 'Me too.' (Ben de.) deriz. Katılmıyorsak (disagreeing) kibar olmak önemlidir: 'I'm sorry, but I don't agree.' (Kusura bakma ama katılmıyorum.), 'I disagree. I think they are a bit boring.', 'Maybe, but ...' (Olabilir ama ...). Emin değilsek 'I'm not sure.' deriz. Olumsuz bir cümleye katılırken Me too değil Me neither kullanılır: 'I don't like soap operas.' — 'Me neither.' (Ben de sevmem.)

Past Events in Detail: Negative Sentences, Time Expressions and -ed Sounds

Geçmiş haftalarda Did you watch ...? sorusunu ve Wh- sorularını çalıştık. Bu hafta geçmişte yapmadığımız şeyleri anlatıyoruz. Simple Past olumsuz cümle subject + didn't (did not) + V1 kalıbıyla kurulur; didn't geçmiş zamanı zaten gösterdiği için fiil yalın kalır: 'I didn't watch the match last night.' (Dün gece maçı izlemedim.) 'didn't watched' yanlıştır. Sıfatlı cümlelerde wasn't / weren't kullanılır: 'The episode wasn't boring.' (Bölüm sıkıcı değildi.) Bir bilgiyi düzeltirken instead (onun yerine) çok işe yarar: 'Did you watch the wildlife documentary last night?' — 'No, I didn't. I watched a sitcom instead.'

Geçmişteki bir olayın ne zaman olduğunu past time expressions (geçmiş zaman ifadeleri) gösterir: yesterday (dün), yesterday morning / afternoon / evening (dün sabah / öğleden sonra / akşam), last night / week / weekend / Saturday / month (dün gece, geçen hafta / hafta sonu / cumartesi / ay), two days ago (iki gün önce), an hour ago (bir saat önce) ve the day before yesterday (evvelsi gün). Bu ifadeler genellikle cümlenin sonunda ya da başında yer alır: 'Two days ago, I recorded a quiz show.' ago her zaman süreden sonra gelir: three weeks ago ('ago three weeks' denmez).

Screen Time: Advantages and Disadvantages of Watching TV

Bu konuda konuşurken şu soruları sorarız: 'How many hours a day do you watch TV?' (Günde kaç saat televizyon izlersin?) — 'About two hours a day.' (Günde yaklaşık iki saat.) 'How much time do you spend in front of the TV at weekends?' — 'I spend about three hours.' Burada a day (günde), a week (haftada) ve about (yaklaşık) ifadeleri sık kullanılır: 'My cousin watches TV for ten hours a week.'

Televizyonun advantages (avantajlar, yararlar) ve disadvantages (dezavantajlar, zararlar) vardır. Yararları: We learn new things from documentaries. (Belgesellerden yeni şeyler öğreniriz.), We follow the news. (Haberleri takip ederiz.), We relax after school. (Okuldan sonra dinleniriz.) Zararları: Too much TV is bad for our eyes. (Fazla TV gözlerimize zararlıdır.), We don't do enough exercise. (Yeterince egzersiz yapmayız.), We spend less time with our family and friends. Görüş bildirirken 'In my opinion, ...' (Bence ...), 'One advantage is ...' (Bir avantajı ...), 'One disadvantage is ...' kalıpları ve zıt fikir için However (Ancak) kullanılır: 'Documentaries are educational. However, watching TV for hours is not healthy.'

We should choose our programs carefully.' (Programlarımızı dikkatle seçmeliyiz.) 'You shouldn't watch TV late at night.' (Gece geç saatte TV izlememelisin.) 'In our house, we never watch TV during dinner.' (Evimizde akşam yemeğinde asla TV izlemeyiz.) 'I always turn off the TV before bed.'

Advantages (+)Disadvantages (−)
We learn new facts from documentaries.Too much TV is bad for our eyes.
We follow the news and the weather. We don't do enough exercise.
We relax and have fun after school. We spend less time with family and friends.

Writing an Email to a Friend About TV

Bir e-posta şu bölümlerden oluşur: (1) Greeting (selamlama): Hi Selin, / Dear Mert, (2) Opening (giriş): How are you? I hope you're fine. (3) Routines (alışkanlıklar, Simple Present + sıklık zarfları): I usually watch TV for an hour after my homework. (4) Past experience (deneyim, Simple Past): Last night I watched ... (5) Preference, opinion and recommendation (tercih, görüş, öneri): I prefer ... to ... / I think ... / You should watch it. (6) Closing (kapanış): Write soon! / Best wishes, / See you, ve adımız.

Model email: 'Hi Selin, How are you? I hope you're fine. I want to tell you about my TV week. I don't watch TV on school days, but I often watch documentaries at weekends. My favorite TV program is Wild Earth. Last night I didn't watch the football match. I watched the wildlife documentary instead, and it was fantastic! First, we saw the lions in Africa. Then, a baby elephant found its mother. I prefer documentaries to reality shows because reality shows are pretty boring. You should watch the next episode on Saturday. I can't wait for it! Write soon! Best wishes, Deniz' Bu e-postada haftanın tüm yapıları vardır: sıklık zarfları, tercih, olumsuz ve olumlu geçmiş zaman, pekiştireç, öneri ve I can't wait for it.

E-postayı bitirdikten sonra bir checklist (kontrol listesi) ile gözden geçirmeliyiz: Alışkanlıkları Simple Present, dün olanları Simple Past ile yazdım mı? he / she öznesinde fiile -s ekledim mi? didn't sonrasında fiili yalın bıraktım mı? Gün, ay, kanal ve program adlarını (Saturday, January, Channel 3, Wild Earth) ve I zamirini büyük harfle yazdım mı? and, but, because, so, First, Then gibi bağlaçlarla cümleleri bağladım mı?
