Bu hafta

Geçen hafta evlerimizi, odalarımızı ve mahallemizdeki yerleri tanıyıp yol tarif etmeyi öğrenmiştik. Bu hafta 'Life in the House and Neighbourhood' temasında bir adım daha ileri gidiyoruz. Mahallemizde nelerin ve ne kadar bulunduğunu quantifiers ile anlatacak, apartman ve ev kurallarını must / have to yapılarıyla ifade edecek, komşularımızdan kibarca ricada bulunmayı ve onlara yardım teklif etmeyi öğreneceğiz. Bunlara ek olarak mahalle sorunlarına öneriler geliştirecek, mahallemizin geçmişini ve bugününü used to ile karşılaştıracak ve gerçek hayattan bir kiralık ev ilanını okuyup anlayacağız. Yeni yıla girerken yaşadığımız çevreyi İngilizce anlatmanın tam zamanı!

Quantifiers: How Much and How Many in the Neighbourhood

Some genellikle olumlu cümlelerde, any ise olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde kullanılır ve her iki isim türüyle de gelebilir: 'There are some nice cafés in my street.' / 'There isn't any pollution here.' / 'Are there any parks near your flat?' Would you like some tea?' Many sayılabilir, much sayılamaz isimlerle özellikle olumsuz cümle ve sorularda yer alır: 'There aren't many parking spaces.' / 'Is there much traffic in the mornings?' A lot of / lots of ise olumlu cümlelerde her iki isim türüyle rahatça kullanılır: 'There are a lot of shops and there is a lot of noise.'

Az miktar bildirirken sayılabilir isimlerle a few, sayılamaz isimlerle a little kullanılır: 'There are a few benches in the park.' / 'There is a little green space behind our building.' Burada önemli bir anlam inceliği vardır: 'a few / a little' olumlu bir anlam taşır (az ama yeterli), 'few / little' ise olumsuz bir vurgu yapar (yetersiz, neredeyse hiç): 'Few people use this old playground.' Miktar sorarken sayılabilir isimlerde How many + çoğul isim, sayılamaz isimlerde How much + isim kalıbı kullanılır: 'How many supermarkets are there?' / 'How much traffic is there at rush hour?' Aşırılığı anlatırken de aynı ayrım geçerlidir: 'too many cars' (çok fazla araba) ama 'too much noise' (çok fazla gürültü).

House Rules: Must, Mustn't, Have To and Don't Have To

Must + V1 güçlü bir zorunluluğu ya da konuşanın kendi önemli bulduğu bir kuralı anlatır; tüm öznelerle aynı biçimde kullanılır, '-s' almaz ve arkasından 'to' gelmez: 'You must close the main door at night.' / 'He must keep his bike in the storage room.' Yazılı kurallarda, uyarı levhalarında ve duyurularda 'must' çok sık görülür: 'Residents must keep the stairs clean.'

Have to / has to + V1 ise dışarıdan gelen bir zorunluluğu, yani kurallar, yasalar ya da koşullar nedeniyle yapılması gereken işleri anlatır. Üçüncü tekil şahıslarda 'has to' kullanılır; olumsuz ve soru cümleleri 'do / does' yardımcı fiiliyle kurulur: 'We have to pay the building fee every month.' / 'My sister has to walk the dog before school.' / 'Do we have to separate the recycling?' Geçmiş zamanda 'must' yerine had to kullanılır: 'Last year we had to repaint our balcony because of the new rules.'

Bu konunun en kritik noktası olumsuz biçimlerdir. Mustn't (must not) bir şeyin yasak olduğunu, kesinlikle yapılmaması gerektiğini anlatır: 'You mustn't play loud music after 10 p.m.' / 'Children mustn't play football in the corridor.' Don't have to / doesn't have to ise bir şeyin gerekli olmadığını, yani yapılıp yapılmamasının kişinin tercihine bağlı olduğunu gösterir: 'You don't have to take your shoes off in the hall, but you can if you like.' Ayrıca izin ve yasak için 'can / can't' ile 'be allowed to / not be allowed to' da kullanılabilir: 'We aren't allowed to have barbecues on the balcony.' Ev içi kurallarda ise aile bireyleri arasındaki sorumluluklar dile getirilir: 'I have to tidy my room before I go out, but I don't have to cook.'

Being a Good Neighbour: Polite Requests, Offers and Responses

İyi komşuluk ilişkileri (good neighbourly relations) karşılıklı yardımlaşma ve nezaket üzerine kuruludur. Can you + V1? günlük ve samimi bir ricadır: 'Can you hold the door, please?' Could you + V1? daha kibar bir ricadır: 'Could you water my plants while I'm on holiday?' Would you mind + V-ing? ise en nazik kalıplardan biridir ve ardından fiil mutlaka '-ing' alır: 'Would you mind turning the music down a little?' Bir şeyi ödünç istemek için 'Can / Could I borrow your ladder, please?' kalıbı kullanılır.

Komşumuza yardım teklif ederken teklif cümleleri (offers) kullanırız: Shall I + V1? ('Shall I carry those heavy bags for you?'), Would you like me to + V1? ('Would you like me to feed your cat this weekend?') ve anında verilen kararlar için I'll + V1 ('Don't worry, I'll help you move the sofa.'). Bir ricaya olumlu yanıt verirken 'Sure. / Of course. / No problem. / Certainly.' gibi ifadeler; kibarca reddederken ise 'I'm sorry, but I can't. I'm busy right now.' ya da 'I'd like to, but...' kalıpları tercih edilir. Bir teklifi kabul ederken 'That's very kind of you, thank you!', geri çevirirken 'Thanks, but I can manage.' denir.

Ödünç alma ve verme konusunda sık karıştırılan iki fiil vardır: borrow (ödünç almak) ve lend (ödünç vermek). 'Can I borrow your drill?' cümlesinde konuşan kişi alan taraftır; 'Can you lend me your drill?' cümlesinde ise karşıdaki kişiden vermesi istenir. İyi bir komşu ayrıca yeni taşınanları karşılar ('Welcome to the neighbourhood!'), gürültü yapmadan önce haber verir ('We are having a small party on Saturday. I hope it's not a problem.') ve özür dilemeyi bilir ('I'm so sorry about the noise last night.').

Neighbourhood Problems and Making Suggestions

Hiçbir mahalle kusursuz değildir; birçok mahallede sakinlerin birlikte çözmesi gereken sorunlar (neighbourhood problems) vardır. Sık karşılaşılan sorunlar arasında 'litter / rubbish in the streets' (sokaklardaki çöpler), 'heavy traffic' (yoğun trafik), 'noise pollution' (gürültü kirliliği), 'air pollution' (hava kirliliği), 'lack of parking spaces' (park yeri eksikliği), 'broken streetlights' (bozuk sokak lambaları), 'lack of green spaces / playgrounds' (yeşil alan ve oyun alanı eksikliği) ve 'graffiti on the walls' (duvarlardaki izinsiz yazılar) sayılabilir. Sorunu anlatırken bir önceki bölümde öğrendiğimiz miktar belirteçlerinden yararlanırız: 'There is too much traffic and there aren't enough parking spaces.'

Bir soruna çözüm önerirken öneri kalıpları (making suggestions) kullanılır. Should / shouldn't + V1 tavsiye bildirir: 'People should put their rubbish in the bins.' / 'Drivers shouldn't park on the pavement.' Birlikte bir şey yapmayı önermek için Let's + V1 ('Let's organise a clean-up day.'), Why don't we + V1? ('Why don't we plant some trees in the empty area?'), How about / What about + V-ing? ('How about starting a recycling project?') ve We could + V1 ('We could write a letter to the municipality.') kalıpları tercih edilir. Burada dikkat: 'How about' kalıbından sonra fiil daima '-ing' alır.

Bir öneriye katıldığımızı göstermek için 'That's a good / great idea!', 'Sounds good.', 'I agree with you.' ifadelerini; katılmadığımızı kibarca belirtmek için ise 'I'm not sure about that.', 'I don't think that's a good idea because...' ya da 'Maybe, but...' kalıplarını kullanırız. Our neighbours organised a tree-planting day last spring, and now the park looks greener.' Bu tür cümlelerde nedeni 'because', sonucu ise 'so' bağlacıyla vermek anlatımı güçlendirir: 'The streets are dark at night because the streetlights are broken, so we should report it.'

Then and Now: Changes in Our Neighbourhood

Mahalleler zamanla değişir: eski bahçeli evlerin yerini apartmanlar alır, yeni parklar ve alışveriş merkezleri açılır, ulaşım kolaylaşır. Bir mahallenin geçmişini ve bugününü karşılaştırırken (then and now) geçmişteki durumu There was / There were ile, bugünkü durumu ise There is / There are ile anlatırız. Tekil ve sayılamaz isimlerle 'there was', çoğul isimlerle 'there were' kullanılır: 'Thirty years ago, there was a small cinema in our street, and there were a lot of gardens. Now there is a big shopping mall, and there are many tall blocks of flats.' Olumsuz ve soru biçimleri: 'There wasn't much traffic.' / 'Were there any parks?'

Geçmişte düzenli olarak yapılan ama artık yapılmayan alışkanlıkları ve geçmişte var olup artık var olmayan durumları anlatmak için used to + V1 yapısı kullanılır. Bu yapı tüm öznelerle aynıdır: 'My grandparents used to live in a wooden house.' / 'Children used to play hide-and-seek in the street.' / 'There used to be a bakery on the corner, but now it's a pharmacy.' Olumsuz cümlelerde didn't use to + V1, sorularda Did + özne + use to + V1? kalıbı kullanılır: 'People didn't use to have cars in this village.' / 'Did your street use to be so busy?'

Değişimi yorumlarken geçen hafta öğrendiğimiz karşılaştırma yapılarıyla bu haftanın yapılarını birleştiririz: 'Our neighbourhood is more crowded and noisier now than it was in the past, but it is also safer because there are more streetlights.' Değişimin olumlu ve olumsuz yanlarını ifade etmek için 'One advantage is that...', 'One disadvantage is that...', 'In the past..., but today...' ve 'Compared to the past...' kalıpları kullanılır. Bu tür karşılaştırmalı anlatımlarda zaman ifadelerine dikkat ederiz: geçmiş için 'in the past, in the 1990s, when my parents were young, thirty years ago'; bugün için 'now, nowadays, today, these days'.

Reading House Advertisements and Describing Your Ideal Home

For rent / to let kiralık, for sale satılık anlamına gelir. Furnished eşyalı, unfurnished eşyasız ev demektir. Evi kiraya veren kişiye landlord / landlady (ev sahibi), evde kira ödeyerek oturan kişiye tenant (kiracı) denir. 'Rent' aylık kira bedelini, 'deposit' depozitoyu, 'bills included' ise faturaların (elektrik, su, doğalgaz) kiraya dahil olduğunu gösterir.

İlanlarda yer kazanmak için kısaltmalar kullanılır: '2-bed' (iki yatak odalı), 'sq m' (metrekare), 'nr' (near: yakınında), 'incl.' (included: dahil), 'approx.' (approximately: yaklaşık) ve 'tel.' (telefon). Örnek bir ilan şöyle okunur: 'FOR RENT: Sunny 2-bed flat, 3rd floor, 85 sq m, fully furnished, nr metro station, 15,000 TL per month, bills not incl.' Bu ilan, metro istasyonuna yakın, üçüncü katta, 85 metrekarelik, tamamen eşyalı ve faturaları kiraya dahil olmayan iki yatak odalı bir daireyi anlatmaktadır. İlan okurken ayrıntılı okuma (reading for specific information) stratejisini kullanırız: önce soruyu okur, ardından ilanda yalnız gereken bilgiyi (kat, fiyat, konum) ararız.

Hayalimizdeki evi (ideal home / dream house) anlatırken isteklerimizi would like to + V1 ve I'd love to + V1 kalıplarıyla ifade ederiz: 'I would like to live in a detached house near the sea.' Evin özelliklerini sıralarken 'It would have a large garden, three bedrooms and a quiet study.' gibi cümleler kurabiliriz. Cümleleri 'and, also, in addition, but, because, so' bağlaçlarıyla birbirine bağlamak paragrafı akıcı kılar.

Örnekler

  1. Örnek 1Aşağıdaki diyalogdaki boşlukları 'much, many, a few, a little, any' belirteçlerinden uygun olanlarla doldurunuz ve seçiminizi açıklayınız. Deniz: 'How ___ parks are there in your neighbourhood?' Arda: 'Not many, only ___. There isn't ___ green space, but there is ___ cafés? No, sorry, there are ___ cafés near the square.'

    Cevabı göster

    1. 'parks' sayılabilir çoğul bir isimdir, soru kalıbı 'How many' olur: 'How many parks...?' 2. Sayılabilir isimde az ama yeterli miktar 'a few' ile anlatılır: 'only a few'. 3. 'green space' sayılamazdır ve cümle olumsuzdur, bu yüzden 'much' gelir: 'There isn't much green space.' 4. Arda kendini düzeltip 'cafés' (sayılabilir çoğul) için 'a few' kullanmalıdır; 'a little' sayılamaz isimler içindir. Doğru cümle: 'There are a few cafés near the square.' Sonuç: many / a few / much / a few.

  2. Örnek 2Apartman yönetiminin duyurusundaki boşlukları 'must, mustn't, have to, don't have to' ile tamamlayınız: 'Dear residents, you ___ leave your bikes in the corridor because it blocks the fire exit. All residents ___ pay the monthly fee by the 5th. You ___ come to the meeting on Friday, but it would be nice to see you there.'

    Cevabı göster

    1. Bisikletleri koridora bırakmak yangın çıkışını kapattığı için yasaktır: 'mustn't'. 2. Aidat ödemek dışarıdan gelen bir zorunluluktur: 'have to' (ya da yazılı kural olarak 'must'). 3. Toplantıya gelmek zorunlu değildir, isteğe bağlıdır; 'but it would be nice' ifadesi bunu gösterir: 'don't have to'. Tam metin: 'You mustn't leave your bikes in the corridor... All residents have to pay the monthly fee by the 5th. You don't have to come to the meeting on Friday, but it would be nice to see you there.'

Rica (borrow ile): 'Excuse me, Mr Kaya. Could I borrow your drill for an hour, please?' Rica (lend ile): 'Could you lend me your drill for an hour, please?' Olumlu yanıt: 'Of course. Here you are. Just bring it back this evening.' Kibar ret: 'I'm sorry, but my son is using it at the moment. Maybe tomorrow?' Açıklama: 'borrow' kullanıldığında konuşan kişi ödünç alan taraftır (Could I borrow...?), 'lend' kullanıldığında ise karşıdaki kişiden vermesi istenir (Could you lend me...?).

Sorunlar: 'There is too much litter in the park.' / 'There isn't a safe playground for children.' Öneriler: 1. should: 'People should put their rubbish in the bins.' 2. Let's: 'Let's organise a clean-up day with our neighbours.' 3. Why don't we: 'Why don't we write a letter to the municipality and ask for a new playground?' 4. How about: 'How about putting more recycling bins near the benches?' Dikkat: 'How about' kalıbından sonra 'putting' gibi '-ing'li fiil, diğer kalıplardan sonra yalın fiil gelir.

  5. Örnek 5Dedenizin anlattıklarını 'used to' ve 'There was / There were' kullanarak İngilizce cümlelere dönüştürünüz: (a) Eskiden mahallede bir sinema vardı, şimdi yok. (b) Çocuklar eskiden sokakta oynardı. (c) Eskiden çok araba yoktu. Ardından bugünü anlatan bir karşılaştırma cümlesi ekleyiniz.

    Cevabı göster

    (a) 'There used to be a cinema in the neighbourhood.' ya da 'There was a cinema in the neighbourhood, but there isn't one now.' (b) 'Children used to play in the street.' (Geçmişteki ve artık sürmeyen bir alışkanlık olduğu için used to + V1.) (c) 'There weren't many cars.' ('cars' çoğul olduğu için 'were', olumsuz cümle ve sayılabilir isim olduğu için 'many'.) Karşılaştırma: 'Today the neighbourhood is more crowded than it was in the past, and there is a lot of traffic.'

  6. Örnek 6İlanı okuyup soruları cevaplayınız: 'TO LET: Cosy 1-bed flat, ground floor, 55 sq m. Unfurnished. Small garden. Nr bus stop and library. 12,000 TL per month, bills incl. No pets. Contact the landlady: Mrs Şahin.' (a) Is the flat furnished? (b) Which floor is it on? (c) Do tenants have to pay the bills separately? (d) Can you live here with your cat?

    Cevabı göster

    (a) No, it isn't. 'Unfurnished' eşyasız demektir, kiracının kendi mobilyasını getirmesi gerekir. (b) It is on the ground floor (zemin kat). (c) No, they don't have to. 'Bills incl.' faturaların kiraya dahil olduğunu gösterir. (d) No, you can't. 'No pets' evcil hayvanın kabul edilmediği anlamına gelir; yani 'Tenants mustn't keep pets.'

As a member of the residents' committee, write a short notice (5-6 sentences) in English for the building notice board. Include: one sentence describing the problems with a quantifier, two rules (must / mustn't / have to), one polite request, and one suggestion for a community activity.

Kısaca

  • Quantifiers: Sayılabilir isimlerle 'many, a few, How many', sayılamaz isimlerle 'much, a little, How much' kullanılır; 'some' olumlu, 'any' olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde tercih edilir, 'a lot of' ise her iki isim türüyle de kullanılır.
  • House Rules: 'must' ve 'have to' zorunluluk, 'mustn't' yasak, 'don't have to' ise gereklilik olmadığını (isteğe bağlı olduğunu) anlatır; 'mustn't' ile 'don't have to' aynı anlama gelmez.
  • Requests and Offers: Komşulardan rica ederken 'Can / Could you...?', 'Would you mind + V-ing?' ve 'Can I borrow...?'; yardım teklif ederken 'Shall I...?', 'Would you like me to...?' ve 'I'll...' kalıpları kullanılır.
  • Problems and Suggestions: Mahalle sorunlarına çözüm önerirken 'should + V1', 'Why don't we + V1?', 'Let's + V1' ve 'How about + V-ing?' yapılarına başvurulur.
  • Then and Now: Mahallenin geçmişteki durumunu 'There was / There were' ve 'used to + V1' ile, bugünkü durumunu ise 'There is / There are' ve Present Simple ile anlatırız.
  • House Advertisements: Kiralık ve satılık ev ilanlarında 'for rent, for sale, furnished, landlord, tenant, bills included' gibi terimler ve 'nr, incl., sq m' gibi kısaltmalar sıkça yer alır.
