Bu hafta

Yeni yıla hepimiz hoş geldik! Geçen hafta mahallemizde nelerin bulunduğunu miktar belirteçleriyle anlatmış, apartman kurallarını öğrenmiş, komşularımıza kibarca ricada bulunmuş ve mahallemizin geçmişini bugünüyle karşılaştırmıştık. Bu hafta 'Life in the House and Neighbourhood' temasını tamamlarken bir taşınma hikâyesini Past Simple ile anlatacak, evleri sıfatlar, too ve enough ile betimleyecek, eşyaların kime ait olduğunu possessives ve whose ile soracak, mahalledeki kişi ve yerleri who, which, that, where ile tanıtacağız.

Moving to a New House: Past Simple Narratives

Bu süreci anlatırken bazı temel kelimelere ihtiyaç duyarız: pack (eşyaları kutulara yerleştirmek), unpack (kutulardan çıkarmak), cardboard box (karton kutu), removal van (nakliye kamyoneti), removal company (nakliye firması), settle in (yeni yere alışmak, yerleşmek) ve housewarming party (ev hayırlaması / yeni ev partisi). Yeni evimize taşındığımız günü bir arkadaşımıza anlatırken geçmişte başlayıp bitmiş olayları anlatan Past Simple zamanını kullanırız: 'We moved to a new flat last month.'

Düzenli fiiller (regular verbs) geçmiş zamanda '-ed' eki alır: pack → packed, carry → carried, move → moved, unpack → unpacked, arrive → arrived. Düzensiz fiillerin (irregular verbs) ise kendine özgü biçimleri vardır ve ezberlenmelidir: take → took, put → put, drive → drove, meet → met, have → had, buy → bought, give → gave, sleep → slept. Olumsuz cümlelerde didn't + V1, sorularda Did + özne + V1? kalıbı kullanılır; bu yapılarda fiil yalın hâline döner: 'We didn't sleep well on the first night.' / 'Did you meet your new neighbours?' 'When did you move?' ve 'How long did it take?' gibi Wh- sorularıyla da ayrıntı isteriz.

Bir olayı anlatırken olayların sırasını belirtmek hikâyeyi anlaşılır kılar. Bunun için sıralama sözcükleri (sequencing words) kullanılır: 'First, we packed all our things into boxes. Then, the removal company loaded the van. After that, we drove to our new neighbourhood. Next, we unpacked the kitchen things. Finally, we had a small housewarming party.' Zaman ifadeleri de geçmişi işaret eder: 'last week, last month, two days ago, yesterday, in December'. Hikâyeyi duygularla zenginleştirmek için 'It was exhausting but exciting.' ya da 'I felt a bit sad because I left my old friends.' gibi cümleler eklenebilir.

Describing Homes: Adjectives, Too and Enough

Sıfatlar İngilizcede isimden önce gelir ve çoğul almaz: 'a bright room', 'two bright rooms' (brights rooms değil).

Too + sıfat gereğinden fazla olduğunu ve bunun bir soruna yol açtığını gösterir: 'This flat is too small for a family of five.' (Beş kişilik bir aile için fazla küçük.) Sıfat + enough yeterli olduğunu anlatır ve 'enough' sıfattan sonra gelir: 'The kitchen is big enough for a dining table.' Not + sıfat + enough ise yetersizliği bildirir: 'The living room isn't bright enough.' İsimlerle kullanıldığında 'enough' ismin önüne geçer: 'There are enough bedrooms for everyone.' / 'There isn't enough storage space.' Sonuç bildirmek için 'to + V1' eklenebilir: 'The garden is too small to play football in.'

Birden fazla sıfat kullandığımızda belli bir sıfat sırası (order of adjectives) izlenir: önce görüş (opinion: lovely, beautiful), sonra büyüklük (size: big, small), yaş (age: old, new), renk (colour: white, red) ve malzeme (material: wooden, stone), en sonda da isim gelir: 'a lovely big old wooden house' (güzel, büyük, eski, ahşap bir ev). Günlük konuşmada genellikle iki ya da üç sıfat yeterlidir: 'a beautiful white stone villa', 'a cosy little flat'. Sıfatların anlamını güçlendirmek için 'very, really, quite' kullanılabilir: 'Our new flat is really spacious and quite bright.'

Whose Is It? Possessives in the Home

İngilizcede sahibini sormak için Whose + isim + is / are + this / these? kalıbı kullanılır: 'Whose lamp is this?' / 'Whose boxes are these?' Kısaca 'Whose is this?' de denebilir. Cevap verirken sahipliği üç farklı yolla gösterebiliriz: iyelik sıfatları (possessive adjectives), iyelik zamirleri (possessive pronouns) ve 's eki (possessive 's).

İyelik sıfatları her zaman bir ismin önünde gelir: my, your, his, her, its, our, their → 'This is my desk.' / 'That is their garage.' İyelik zamirleri ise ismin yerini tutar, bu yüzden arkalarından isim gelmez: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs → 'This desk is mine.' / 'The garage is theirs.' Böylece aynı ismi iki kez tekrarlamaktan kurtuluruz: 'Is this your key or mine?' Dikkat: 'its' iyelik sıfatıdır ve kesme işareti almaz ('The house has its own garden.'); 'it's' ise 'it is' ya da 'it has' kısaltmasıdır.

Kişi adlarıyla ve isimlerle sahiplik gösterirken 's eki kullanılır: 'It's Ayşe's bike.' / 'This is my brother's room.' Düzenli çoğul isimlerde (-s ile bitenler) yalnız kesme işareti eklenir: 'my parents' bedroom' (anne babamın yatak odası), 'the neighbours' cars'. Düzensiz çoğullarda ise yine 's gelir: 'the children's playroom', 'the women's club'. Cevaplarda kısa biçim kullanılabilir: 'Whose jacket is this?' – 'It's Mert's.' ('Mert's jacket' demeye gerek yoktur.) Cansız varlıklar için çoğunlukla 'of' yapısı tercih edilir: 'the door of the kitchen' ya da birleşik isim 'the kitchen door'.

People and Places in the Neighbourhood: Relative Clauses

'The man is very friendly. He runs the corner shop.' yerine 'The man who runs the corner shop is very friendly.' deriz. Cümlecik, ismin hemen arkasına gelir ve o ismi tanımlar; Türkçedeki '-en, -an, -dığı' ekleriyle kurulan sıfat-fiillere benzer: 'köşedeki dükkânı işleten adam'.

Hangi ilgi zamirinin (relative pronoun) seçileceği, tanımlanan ismin türüne bağlıdır. Who insanlar için kullanılır: 'Mrs Demir is the neighbour who waters our plants.' Which eşyalar, hayvanlar ve binalar için kullanılır: 'This is the building which has a rooftop garden.' That hem insanlar hem de eşyalar için 'who' ve 'which' yerine kullanılabilir ve konuşma dilinde çok yaygındır: 'the bus that goes to the city centre', 'the girl that lives upstairs'. Where ise yerler ve mekânlar için kullanılır ve 'orada, o yerde' anlamını taşır: 'This is the park where we play basketball.' / 'That's the café where my parents first met.'

'Where' ile 'which' arasındaki farkı bulmak için şu ipucuna bakarız: cümleciğin içinde ayrı bir özne ve tam bir anlam varsa (we play basketball → orada oynarız) 'where' kullanılır; ilgi zamiri cümleciğin öznesi ya da nesnesi ise (the building which has... → bina sahiptir) 'which' kullanılır. 'The library which opened last year' (geçen yıl açılan kütüphane) ama 'the library where I study' (ders çalıştığım kütüphane). Bu yapılar mahalle tanıtımlarında, haritalı sunumlarda ve e-postalarda anlatımı oldukça zenginleştirir: 'There is a bakery near my house which sells delicious simit, and the woman who owns it always smiles.'

Eco-Friendly Homes: The Zero Conditional and Energy-Saving Tips

Günümüzde evlerimizi yalnızca rahat değil, aynı zamanda çevre dostu (eco-friendly) hâle getirmek de önemlidir. Bu konuda sık kullanılan kelimeler şunlardır: save energy (enerji tasarrufu yapmak), waste water / electricity (su / elektrik israf etmek), solar panels (güneş panelleri), insulation (yalıtım), energy-saving light bulbs (tasarruflu ampuller), the bill (fatura), reduce, reuse, recycle (azalt, yeniden kullan, geri dönüştür) ve leave on standby (cihazı bekleme modunda bırakmak).

Her zaman doğru olan genel gerçekleri ve kesin sonuçları anlatmak için zero conditional (sıfır koşul) yapısı kullanılır: If + Present Simple, Present Simple. 'If you leave the lights on, you waste electricity.' / 'If we use energy-saving bulbs, our bills go down.' / 'If water reaches 100 °C, it boils.' 'If' yerine 'when' de kullanılabilir: 'When the sun shines, the solar panels produce electricity.' Cümle 'if' ile başlıyorsa iki yan virgülle ayrılır; sonuç bölümü önce gelirse virgül gerekmez: 'Your room stays warm if you close the curtains at night.'

Tavsiye ve talimat vermek için emir kipi (imperatives) de çok kullanışlıdır: olumlu emirler yalın fiille ('Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth.'), olumsuz emirler 'Don't + V1' ile kurulur ('Don't leave the TV on standby.'). Zero conditional ile emir kipi birleşince güçlü ipuçları ortaya çıkar: 'If you don't need a light, switch it off.' Geçen hafta öğrendiğimiz 'should' yapısı da burada işe yarar: 'We should take shorter showers.' Evde küçük alışkanlıklar büyük fark yaratır: 'If every family saves a little water every day, the whole city saves millions of litres.'

If-Clause (condition)Main Clause (result)TurkishTip (imperative)
If you leave the lights on,you waste electricity.Işıkları açık bırakırsan elektrik israf edersin.Switch off the lights.
If the windows are open in winter, the heat escapes.Kışın pencereler açık olursa ısı kaçar.Close the windows when the heating is on.
If you take a short shower, you use less water.Kısa duş alırsan daha az su kullanırsın.Don't stay in the shower too long.
If we recycle paper,we save trees.Kâğıdı geri dönüştürürsek ağaçları koruruz.Put paper in the blue bin.
If a house has good insulation,it stays warm.Ev iyi yalıtılmışsa sıcak kalır.Check the walls and windows.
ZERO CONDITIONAL: IF + PRESENT SIMPLE, PRESENT SIMPLEIf you turn off the lights, you save energy. If the tap drips all night,it wastes a lot of water. If the sun shines, solar panels produce electricity.REDUCE • REUSE • RECYCLE — Don't leave the TV on standby!

Writing an Informal Email About Your New Home

Bu haftanın son adımında, tema boyunca öğrendiğimiz her şeyi bir resmî olmayan e-posta (informal email) içinde birleştiriyoruz. Yeni bir eve taşındığımızı eski mahallemizdeki bir arkadaşımıza anlattığımızı düşünelim. Informal email; selamlama (greeting), giriş (opening), gövde paragrafları (body paragraphs), kapanış (closing) ve imza öncesi veda ifadesi (sign-off) bölümlerinden oluşur. Selamlama için 'Hi Elif,' ya da 'Dear Can,'; girişte 'How are you? I hope you are well.' veya 'Sorry I haven't written for so long, but I've got some exciting news!' gibi samimi cümleler kullanılır. Konu satırı (subject) kısa ve açık olmalıdır: 'Our new flat!'

Gövdede ilk paragraf taşınma hikâyesini Past Simple ve sıralama sözcükleriyle anlatabilir: 'We moved last week. First, we packed everything... Finally, we unpacked.' İkinci paragraf evi sıfatlar, too ve enough ile betimler: 'My new room is bright and spacious, but the balcony is too small for a table.' Üçüncü paragraf mahalleyi ilgi zamirleriyle tanıtır: 'There is a park where I can skate, and the neighbour who lives opposite us is really kind.' Our building has solar panels, so if the sun shines, we don't pay much for electricity.'

Kapanışta arkadaşımıza soru sorar ve onu davet ederiz: 'What about you? How is our old school?' / 'Why don't you come and visit us during the holiday?' Ardından 'Write back soon!', 'Hope to hear from you soon.' ya da 'Say hello to your family.' gibi ifadeler gelir. Veda ifadesi olarak 'Love,', 'Best wishes,', 'Take care,' ya da 'See you soon,' kullanılır ve altına yalnız adımızı yazarız. Informal emaillerde kısaltmalar (I'm, it's, we've) doğaldır; ancak paragraflar düzenli olmalı, bağlaçlarla (and, but, because, so, also) birbirine bağlanmalıdır.

  1. Örnek 1Parantez içindeki fiilleri Past Simple biçimine çevirerek Kerem'in taşınma hikâyesini tamamlayınız: 'Last Saturday we (move) to a new flat. First, my mum (pack) the kitchen things. Then, two workers (carry) the boxes to the van. After that, we (drive) to Ankara Street. We (not / sleep) well on the first night, but on Sunday we (meet) our neighbours.'

3. carry sessiz harf + y ile biter, y → i olur: carried. 4. drive düzensizdir: drove. 5. Olumsuz cümlede didn't + V1 kullanılır: didn't sleep. 6. meet düzensizdir: met. Tam metin: 'Last Saturday we moved to a new flat. First, my mum packed the kitchen things. Then, two workers carried the boxes to the van. After that, we drove to Ankara Street. We didn't sleep well on the first night, but on Sunday we met our neighbours.'

  2. Örnek 2Ailenizle bir ev gezdiniz. Notlarınızı 'too' ya da 'enough' kullanarak İngilizce cümlelere dönüştürünüz: (a) Salon çok küçük; 6 kişi sığmıyor. (b) Mutfak yemek masası için yeterince geniş. (c) Yatak odası yeterince aydınlık değil. (d) Yeterli dolap var.

    Cevabı göster

    (a) Küçüklük bir sorun yarattığı için too + sıfat: 'The living room is too small for six people.' (b) Yeterlilik için sıfat + enough: 'The kitchen is big enough for a dining table.' ('spacious enough' da olur.) (c) Yetersizlik için not + sıfat + enough: 'The bedroom isn't bright enough.' (d) İsimle kullanıldığında enough ismin önüne gelir: 'There are enough cupboards.'

  3. Örnek 3Taşınma sonrası kutular karıştı. Boşlukları uygun iyelik biçimleriyle doldurunuz: Mum: 'Whose books are these, Ece?' Ece: 'They aren't ___ (ben). They're Can's. They're ___ (o, erkek).' Mum: 'And whose is this mirror? Is it ___ (sen)?' Ece: 'No, it's my sister's. It's ___ (o, kız). And those boxes are ___ (anne babam) things.'

    Cevabı göster

    1. İsim gelmediği için iyelik zamiri: mine. 2. Erkek için iyelik zamiri: his. 3. 'you' için iyelik zamiri: yours. 4. Tam diyalog: 'They aren't mine. They're Can's. They're his.' / 'Is it yours?' / 'It's hers. And those boxes are my parents' things.'

  4. Örnek 4Aşağıdaki cümle çiftlerini who, which ya da where kullanarak tek cümle hâline getiriniz: (a) That is the pharmacy. It opens 24 hours. (b) Mr Aksoy is our neighbour. He repairs bikes. (c) This is the square. We meet our friends there.

    Cevabı göster

    (a) 'pharmacy' bir yer/binadır ama cümlecikte 'It' öznedir (it opens), bu yüzden which (ya da that): 'That is the pharmacy which opens 24 hours.' (b) Mr Aksoy bir kişidir: 'Mr Aksoy is our neighbour who repairs bikes.' (Daha doğal biçimi: 'Mr Aksoy is the neighbour who repairs bikes.') (c) 'there' (orada) sözcüğü yer bildirdiği için where gelir ve 'there' silinir: 'This is the square where we meet our friends.' Dikkat: 'the square where we meet our friends there' yanlıştır; 'there' tekrar edilmez.

Konular: ışıklar, musluk, pencereler, televizyonun bekleme modu.

    Cevabı göster

Zero conditional (If + Present Simple, Present Simple): 1. 'If you leave the lights on, you waste electricity.' 2. 'If you open the windows when the heating is on, the heat escapes.' Emir kipi: 3. Olumlu: 'Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth.' 4. Olumsuz (Don't + V1): 'Don't leave the TV on standby.' Kontrol: Zero conditional cümlelerinde iki tarafta da 'will' kullanılmaz ve if-clause önde olduğunda virgül konur.

  6. Örnek 6Aşağıdaki e-posta bölümlerini doğru sıraya koyunuz ve her birinin hangi bölüm (greeting, opening, body, closing, sign-off) olduğunu yazınız: (A) Why don't you come and visit us in February? (B) Love, Melis (C) Hi Zehra, (D) We moved last week. The flat is spacious and there's a library where I can study. (E) How are you? I've got some exciting news!

    Cevabı göster

    1. (C) Hi Zehra, → greeting (selamlama). 2. (E) How are you? I've got some exciting news! → opening (giriş). 3. (D) We moved last week... → body (gövde: Past Simple, sıfat ve 'where' cümleciği içerir). 4. (A) Why don't you come and visit us...? → closing (kapanış: davet). 5. (B) Love, Melis → sign-off (veda ve imza). Doğru sıra: C – E – D – A – B.
