Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and Core Concepts

İkinci Dünya Savaşı'nın ardından temel hak ve özgürlükleri küresel ölçekte güvence altına almak amacıyla Birleşmiş Milletler Genel Kurulu tarafından 10 Aralık 1948 tarihinde Paris'te Universal Declaration of Human Rights (İnsan Hakları Evrensel Beyannamesi) kabul edilmiştir. Komisyon başkanlığını Eleanor Roosevelt'in yürüttüğü bu tarihi belge toplam 30 maddeden (30 articles) oluşur.

Beyannamenin birinci maddesi tüm insanlığın ortak paydasını şu sözlerle ifade eder: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights" (Bütün insanlar hür, onur ve haklar bakımından eşit doğarlar). Beyannamede right to life, liberty and security (yaşama, özgürlük ve güvenlik hakkı), freedom from slavery and torture (kölelik ve işkence yasağı), equality before the law (kanun önünde eşitlik), freedom of thought and expression (düşünce ve ifade özgürlüğü) ve right to education (eğitim hakkı) güvence altına alınmıştır.

Bu temada sıklıkla karşılaşılan temel kelimeler şunlardır: dignity (onur, haysiyet), equality (eşitlik), justice (adalet), conscience (vicdan), inalienable (devredilemez, vazgeçilemez), discrimination (ayrımcılık), prejudice (ön yargı), violation (ihlal) ve deprive of (mahrum bırakmak).

Supporting Disadvantaged People and Offering Solutions

Toplumda fiziksel, ekonomik veya sosyal engeller nedeniyle fırsatlara erişimde güçlük çeken bireylere disadvantaged people (dezavantajlı bireyler) veya vulnerable groups (kırılgan gruplar) denir. Engelli bireyler (people with disabilities), görme engelliler (visually impaired), işitme engelliler (hearing impaired), mülteciler (refugees), yaşlılar (the elderly) ve düşük gelirli aileler bu kapsamda değerlendirilir.

Dezavantajlı bireylerin toplumsal hayata eşit katılımını (social inclusion) sağlamak için kamusal alanlarda wheelchair ramps (tekerlekli sandalye rampaları), tactile pavements (hissedilebilir yürüme yüzeyleri), Braille books (kabartma yazılı metinler), sign language interpreters (işaret dili tercümanları) ve equal educational scholarships (eğitim bursları) yaygınlaştırılmalıdır.

İngilizcede bu sorunlara yönelik çözüm önerileri sunarken "We should / ought to...", "It is vital / essential / crucial to...", "Governments and NGOs must ensure that...", "Why don't we organize a charity event?" ve "How about volunteering at local shelters?" gibi yapılar ile birey onurunu gözeten empatik ve kapsayıcı bir dil (inclusive and empathetic language) kullanılır.

Crafting Human Rights Mottos and Theme Assessment

İnsan hakları farkındalığını artırmak amacıyla hazırlanan motto ve özdeyişler (mottos and watchwords), kısa, çarpıcı, ritmik ve akılda kalıcı cümlelerden oluşur. Etkili bir özdeyiş yazarken genellikle imperative (emir kipi) fiillerle başlanır: "Stand up for human rights!", "Respect differences, embrace diversity!", "Stop discrimination, promote equality!".

Özdeyişlerde anlamı güçlendirmek için zıt kavramların (antonyms) veya paralel yapıların (parallel structures) bir arada kullanılması sık başvurulan bir yöntemdir: "No one is free until everyone is free", "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere", "Equal rights for all, special privileges for none".

Ünite değerlendirmesinde okuma parçalarındaki ana fikri (main idea) bulurken metnin giriş ve sonuç cümlelerine odaklanılmalı; özellikle human dignity (insan onuru), gender equality (cinsiyet eşitliği), childrens rights (çocuk hakları), accessibility (erişilebilirlik) ve philanthropy / charity (hayırseverlik) kavramları arasındaki bağlam ilişkileri dikkatle incelenmelidir.

HUMAN RIGHTS MOTTOS, WATCHWORDS & THEME REVIEW "Human Rights Are Everyone's Rights!" İnsan hakları ayrıcalık değil, doğuştan kazanılan evrensel ve devredilemez haklardır. "No One Is Free Until Everyone Is Free!" Toplumda adalet ve özgürlük bölünmez bir bütündür; ayrımcılığa karşı dayanışma şarttır. "Stand Up for Equality, Speak Up for Justice!" Imperative (Emir kipi) ve paralel yapı kullanılarak etkili ve akılda kalıcı özdeyişler (mottos) oluşturulur. "Respect Differences, Embrace Diversity!" Farklılıklara saygı duymak ve çeşitliliği kucaklamak toplumsal barışın anahtarıdır.
