Bu hafta

In Week 14 of «Theme 3: Personal Life», we bring together all three sub-themes of our unit: «Basic body parts and physical features; clothes; daily routines and activities». We learn how to name parts of the human body, describe what people look like using «to be» and «have got / has got», compare physical features and clothes using comparative adjectives, and talk about what we wear and what we do every day using the Simple Present Tense, frequency adverbs, and question tags.

Basic Body Parts and Physical Features Vocabulary

To describe a person accurately in English, we first need to know the target nouns for basic body parts: a head (baş), a face (yüz), hair (saç), an eye (göz), a nose (burun), a neck (boyun), an arm (kol), a hand (el), a finger (el parmağı), a leg (bacak), a foot (ayak), a tooth (diş), a body (vücut) and height (boy uzunluğu). Most body parts form their plural by adding «-s» (two eyes, two arms, ten fingers, two legs), whereas tooth becomes teeth (dişler) and foot becomes feet (ayaklar). In addition, hair is used as an uncountable singular noun in English (e.g., «Her hair is long»).

We combine these nouns with descriptive adjectives for physical features. For height and body build, we use tall (uzun boylu), short (kısa boylu), thin (zayıf/ince) and average (orta boylu/yapılı). For hair style and length, we use straight (düz), wavy (dalgalı), curly (kıvırcık), long (uzun) and short (kısa). For face shapes, we use round (yuvarlak), oval (oval) and square (kare).

Describing Physical Appearance: To Be vs. Have Got and Has Got

When we ask about someone's physical appearance, we use the question «What does he / she look like?» (O nasıl görünür? / Fiziksel görünüşü nasıldır?). Do not confuse this with «What is he/she like?» which asks about personality. When answering, we use two different verb structures depending on whether we use an adjective alone or a noun phrase.

We use am / is / are before height and build adjectives: «I am tall and thin», «He is of average height», «They are short». On the other hand, we use have got (with I, you, we, they) and has got (with he, she, it) when describing specific body parts such as eyes, hair, face, or nose: «She has got curly brown hair and green eyes», «He has got a round face and a small nose».

Clothes, Accessories and Seasonal Clothing Habits

Our personal life also includes the clothes and accessories we wear in different seasons and occasions. For everyday clothing, our target vocabulary includes a T-shirt (tişört), a shirt (gömlek), a jumper / a sweater (kazak), a jacket (ceket), a coat (kaban/mont), a raincoat (yağmurluk), a dress (elbise), a skirt (etek), trousers / pants (pantolon), jeans (kot pantolon), shorts (şort), socks (çoraplar), shoes (ayakkabılar), boots (bot/çizme) and a (fancy dress) costume (kostüm).

We complete our outfits with accessories and jewellery: a belt (kemer), a hat (şapka), a cap (kasketli şapka), a scarf (atkı/fular), a headscarf (başörtüsü), gloves (eldiven), glasses (gözlük), sunglasses (güneş gözlüğü), a bag / a handbag (çanta / el çantası), an umbrella (şemsiye), a watch (kol saati), a ring (yüzük), a necklace (kolye), earrings (küpe) and silver (gümüş) items. Notice that words with two parts like trousers, jeans, shorts, glasses, sunglasses, shoes, boots, gloves, socks, earrings are plural and take «are» (e.g., «My jeans are blue»).

Possessive Adjectives and Comparative Adjectives

To state who owns an item of clothing or whose body part we are describing, we use possessive adjectives before nouns: my (benim), your (senin/sizin), his (onun - erkek), her (onun - kız), its (onun - cansız/hayvan), our (bizim), and their (onların). For example: «His jacket is black, and her handbag is brown.»

When we compare the physical features or clothes of two people, we use comparative adjectives followed by than. One-syllable adjectives take «-er»: tall - taller than, short - shorter than, long - longer than. Adjectives ending in consonant-vowel-consonant double the last letter: thin - thinner than, big - bigger than. Adjectives ending in «-y» change to «-ier»: curly - curlier than. Long adjectives with two or more syllables take «more»: more comfortable than, more colourful than. Irregular adjectives change completely: good - better than, bad - worse than.

Daily Routines, Activities, Time Expressions and Frequency Adverbs

To talk about our daily routines and free-time activities, we use the Simple Present Tense. With I, you, we, they, we use the base form of the verb (wake up, wash, brush, get dressed, have, go, do, sleep). With third-person singular subjects (he, she, it), we add -s, -es, or -ies to the verb in affirmative sentences (wakes up, washes, brushes, gets dressed, has breakfast, goes to school, does homework, studies). In negative and question sentences, we use don't / doesn't and Do / Does with the base verb.

We express how often we do an activity with frequency adverbs: always (%100 - her zaman), usually (%80 - genellikle), often (%60 - sık sık), sometimes (%40 - bazen), and never (%0 - asla). They go before main verbs («She always brushes her teeth») but after am/is/are («He is never late»). For time expressions, we use at with clock times and night (at 7 o'clock, at half past seven, at quarter to eight, at night), in with parts of the day and seasons (in the morning, in winter), and on with days (on Mondays, on Sunday morning).

Question Tags and Pronunciation of Final -s / -es Sounds

In everyday conversation, we use question tags («değil mi?») at the end of a statement to confirm information or ask for agreement. The golden rule is: a positive statement takes a negative tag, and a negative statement takes a positive tag. With «to be», we repeat the form of be: «She is tall, isn't she?», «Your boots aren't new, are they?». With Simple Present verbs, we use don't / doesn't or do / does: «You wear glasses, don't you?», «He gets up early, doesn't he?», «She doesn't like rings, does she?».

In pronunciation (ENG.5.3.P1), the final -s / -es in plural nouns (like clothes and body parts) and third-person singular verbs is pronounced in three different ways: 1) /s/ after voiceless sounds (p, t, k, f): caps, coats, boots, shirts, skirts, socks, walks, gets. 2) /z/ after vowels and voiced sounds (b, d, g, l, m, n, r, v): shoes, jeans, gloves, bags, rings, eyes, legs, wears, goes. 3) /ız/ after sibilant sounds (s, sh, ch, x, z): dresses, glasses, sunglasses, watches, necklaces, brushes, washes.
