School Life: People and Places at School, a/an/the and To Be

Theme 1: School Life teması · Konu özeti

Etkinlikler
Bu hafta

Geçen hafta School Life temasına giriş yaptık; okuldaki kişileri, yerleri, kulüpleri ve kuralları kısaca tanıdık. Bu hafta okuldaki kişileri ve yerleri daha yakından öğreniyoruz: a secretary, a coach, an assistant gibi kişileri ve a canteen, a lab, a conference hall gibi yerleri adlandıracak, bunları a/an/the ile doğru söyleyecek, to be (am, is, are) ve kişi zamirleriyle kim ve nerede olduğumuzu anlatacak, who ve what ile soru soracağız. Haftanın sonunda okulumuzu tanıtan kısa bir metin okuyup olumlu cümlelerin ses tonuna dikkat edeceğiz.

People at school

Okulda birçok kişi birlikte çalışır. Okulu yöneten kişi the headmaster (okul müdürü), kadınsa the headmistress'tir. Ona yardım eden kişi an assistant to the headmaster (müdür yardımcısı) olarak adlandırılır. A secretary (sekreter) idare bölümünde çalışır, telefonlara bakar ve belgeleri düzenler. A coach (antrenör) spor sahasında öğrencileri çalıştırır ve okul takımını hazırlar.

Okuldaki diğer kişiler: a teacher (öğretmen), an English teacher (İngilizce öğretmeni), a cook (aşçı), a doctor (doktor), a nurse (hemşire), a student (öğrenci). Bir kişiyi tanıtırken kim olduğunu ve ne yaptığını söyleriz: “This is Mr. Kaya. He is our coach. He trains the basketball team.” “Mrs. Demir is the secretary. She works in the administration department.”

Yetişkinlere soyadıyla hitap ederiz: erkekler için Mr. (Mr. Kaya), kadınlar için Mrs. ya da Ms. (Mrs. Demir, Ms. Yıldız). Okulda çalışan herkese birlikte the school staff (okul personeli) denir. Sınıf arkadaşlarımıza ise classmates deriz: “Ela and Can are my classmates.”

Places at school

Okuldaki yerler: a canteen (kantin), a library (kütüphane), a lab (laboratuvar), a sports field (spor sahası), a conference hall (konferans salonu), an administration department (idare bölümü), a gate (okul kapısı), a notice board (duyuru panosu), a classroom (sınıf), a corridor (koridor). Okulun bölümlerine department deriz; the administration department müdürün ve sekreterin çalıştığı bölümdür. The notice board ise kuralların ve kulüp duyurularının asıldığı panodur.

Bir yerde olduğumuzu in ve at ile söyleriz: in the canteen, in the lab, in the library, in the conference hall, in the sports field, at the gate, at school. “The students are in the canteen.” “The coach is in the sports field.” “Our headmaster is at the gate in the morning.”

Okulumuzda neler olduğunu there is / there are ile anlatırız: “There is a big library in our school.” “There are two labs on the first floor.” Yerlerin konumunu da söyleyebiliriz: “The canteen is downstairs.” “The lab is upstairs, next to the library.”

a, an and the

Tekil ve belirsiz bir varlıktan söz ederken a ya da an kullanırız. Seçimi sözcüğün harfi değil, sesi belirler: ünsüz sesle başlıyorsa a (a canteen, a coach, a library), ünlü sesle başlıyorsa an (an assistant, an art club, an English teacher, an administration department). Uniform sözcüğü u harfiyle başlar ama “yu” sesiyle söylenir; bu yüzden a uniform deriz.

The, belirli ve bilinen bir varlık için kullanılır. Bir şeyden ikinci kez söz ettiğimizde a yerine the gelir: “There is a lab in our school. The lab is on the first floor.” Okulda tek olan kişi ve yerler de the alır: the headmaster, the secretary, the canteen, the gate. Dünyada tek olan ünlü yapılar için de the kullanırız: “The Eiffel Tower is in France.”

Kişi adlarıyla a/an ya da the kullanılmaz: “Mrs. Demir is the secretary.” (the Mrs. Demir değil). Çoğul isimlerle de a/an kullanılmaz: “There are students in the canteen.” “Our teachers are in the conference hall.”

KullanımExamplesTürkçesi

To be and personal pronouns

Kim olduğumuzu, nerede olduğumuzu ve nasıl olduğumuzu to be fiiliyle söyleriz: am, is, are. I am, you are, he/she/it is, we are, you are, they are. Kısa biçimler: I'm, you're, he's, she's, it's, we're, they're. “I am a student at this school.” “She is our English teacher.” “They are in the lab.”

To be ile dört şey anlatırız: kimlik (“I am a student.” “He is the headmaster.”), yer (“We are in the canteen.” “The lab is upstairs.”), durum (“The library is quiet.” “Mr. Kaya is busy.”) ve özellik (“Our school is big.” “The secretary is friendly.”).

Olumsuz cümlede not gelir: I'm not, isn't (is not), aren't (are not). Soruda is ya da are başa geçer: “Is she the secretary? — Yes, she is. / No, she isn't.” “Are you a new student? — Yes, I am.” “Are they in the conference hall? — No, they aren't. They are in the sports field.”

Kişi zamirleri, kişi ve varlıkların adı yerine kullanılır: Mr. Kaya → he, Mrs. Demir → she, the lab → it, my friends and I → we, the students → they. “Mr. Kaya is a coach. He is in the sports field.” “The canteen is big. It is downstairs.” Zamir seçilince to be de ona uyar: he is, we are, they are.

PronounTo beExample
IamI am a student at this school.
youareYou are new here.
he / she / itisShe is the secretary.
weareWe are in the lab.
theyareThey are our teachers.

Who and what: asking about people and things

Bir kişiyi sormak için who (kim), bir şeyi ya da yeri sormak için what (ne) kullanırız. Soru who/what + is/are ile kurulur: “Who is he? — He is our coach.” “Who is in the lab? — The science teacher is.” “Who are they? — They are the new students.” “What is this? — It is the notice board.” “What is your favourite place at school? — The library.”

Okula yeni gelen bir öğrenci kapıda şöyle sorabilir: “Excuse me, who is the secretary? — Mrs. Demir is. She is in the administration department.” “What is that building? — It is the conference hall.” “What is your favourite subject at school? — My favourite subject is Science.” Cevap kişiyse soru who ile, şeyse what ile başlamıştır.

Yeni bir öğrenciyle tanışırken to be ve zamirleri bir arada kullanırız: “Hello, I'm Deniz. I'm a student in class 5-A. This is Ela. She is my classmate. We are in the art club. Who is your teacher? — Mr. Aydın is our teacher.”

Welcome to our school: reading and intonation

Read the text: “Hello! I am Ela. I am a student at Cumhuriyet Secondary School. Our headmaster is Mr. Yılmaz. He is kind and friendly. Mrs. Demir is the secretary. She is in the administration department next to the gate. Our coach, Mr. Kaya, is in the sports field every afternoon. There is a big library and a science lab on the first floor. The canteen is downstairs. We eat lunch there. The conference hall is new and big. I love my school!”

Questions: 1) Who is the headmaster? 2) Where is the secretary? 3) What is on the first floor? 4) Who is in the sports field every afternoon? Cevaplar: 1) Mr. Yılmaz is. 2) She is in the administration department next to the gate. 3) A big library and a science lab. 4) The coach, Mr. Kaya, is. Önce metne hızlıca göz atıp kişi adlarını (Mr. Yılmaz, Mrs. Demir, Mr. Kaya) ve yer adlarını bulalım; sonra her soru için ilgili cümleyi dikkatle okuyalım.

Olumlu cümlelerin sonunda sesimiz alçalır; buna falling intonation denir: “I am a student at this school. ↘” “The canteen is downstairs. ↘” “He is kind and friendly. ↘” Metni önce dinleyip sonra yüksek sesle okuyalım ve her cümlenin son sözcüğünde sesimizi indirelim. Öğretmenimiz derse “Let's get started!” (Haydi başlayalım!) diyerek başlar; bu da sonu alçalan olumlu bir cümledir.

Örnekler

  1. Örnek 1Boşluklara a ya da an yazınız: ___ secretary, ___ assistant, ___ uniform, ___ English teacher, ___ gate.

    Cevabı göster

a secretary, an assistant, a uniform, an English teacher, a gate. Assistant ve English ünlü sesle başladığı için an alır; uniform u harfiyle başlasa da “yu” sesiyle okunur, bu yüzden a uniform denir.

  2. Örnek 2Boşlukları am, is ya da are ile doldurunuz: I ___ a student. Mr. Kaya ___ our coach. The students ___ in the canteen. We ___ in the library.

    Cevabı göster

I am a student. Mr. Kaya is our coach. The students are in the canteen. We are in the library. I ile am, tekil ad (Mr. Kaya) ile is, çoğul ad (the students) ve we ile are kullanılır.

  3. Örnek 3İkinci cümleleri zamirle yeniden yazınız: “Mrs. Demir is the secretary. Mrs. Demir is in the administration department.” “The lab and the library are upstairs. The lab and the library are big.”

    Cevabı göster

She is in the administration department. They are big. Mrs. Demir bir kadın olduğu için she; the lab and the library iki şey olduğu için they kullanılır ve to be are olur.

  4. Örnek 4Boşluklara who ya da what yazınız: “___ is the coach? — Mr. Kaya is.” “___ is this? — It is a notice board.” “___ are they? — They are the new students.”

    Cevabı göster

Who is the coach? What is this? Who are they? Cevap bir kişi olduğunda (Mr. Kaya, the new students) soru who ile, bir şey olduğunda (a notice board) what ile başlar.

  5. Örnek 5Bir öğrenci “The students is in the lab. The lab is a upstairs.” diyor. Hataları bulup düzeltiniz.

    Cevabı göster

The students are in the lab. The lab is upstairs. The students çoğul olduğu için are gelir; upstairs bir yer zarfıdır, isim değildir, bu yüzden önüne a konmaz.

  6. Örnek 6Okulunuzu dört İngilizce cümleyle tanıtınız: bir kişi, bir yer, o yerin nerede olduğu ve okulunuzun bir özelliği.

    Cevabı göster

Örneğin: Mrs. Ak is our English teacher. There is a big library in our school. The library is on the first floor, next to the lab. Our school is clean and quiet. Kişi ve yer için to be (is), yer için there is, konum için next to kullanıldı.
