First-Term Review: A Grammar Map of Themes 1-5

İlk temalarda okul ve günlük yaşamı anlatırken Present Simple zamanını kullandık: 'I usually walk to school.' / 'My sister doesn't like coffee.' Bu zaman alışkanlıkları, rutinleri ve genel gerçekleri anlatır; 'always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day' gibi sözcüklerle sık kullanılır ve üçüncü tekil şahısta fiil -s alır. Şu anda ya da bu günlerde süren eylemler için ise Present Continuous (am / is / are + V-ing) kullanılır: 'Look! The children are playing in the garden.' / 'I'm studying for my exams this week.' 'now, at the moment, today, Look!, Listen!' bu zamanın işaret sözcükleridir.

Aile ve ev temalarında geçmişi anlatmak için Past Simple kullandık: 'We moved to a new flat last month.' / 'Did you meet your neighbours?' Olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde 'did' kullanıldığında fiilin yalın hâle döndüğünü unutmayalım. Kuralları ve zorunlulukları must / mustn't / have to / don't have to, tavsiyeleri should / shouldn't, yetenekleri ve izinleri can / can't ile anlattık: 'You mustn't make noise after 11 p.m.' / 'You don't have to take off your shoes.' / 'You should talk to your neighbour politely.' Burada 'mustn't' yasak, 'don't have to' ise gereklilik olmadığını anlatır; ikisini karıştırmamak gerekir.

Betimleme ve karşılaştırma için de birçok araç öğrendik: comparatives (bigger than, more modern than), too ve enough (too small, big enough), possessives (mine, yours, Ali's), relative clauses (the man who runs the shop, the park where we play) ve genel gerçekler için zero conditional (If you save water, your bill goes down.). Bu hafta şehir temasına geçerken bu yapıların hepsini yeniden kullanacağız: 'The city is bigger than our village.' / 'The bus which goes to the stadium stops here.'

Theme 6 Preparation: Places and Landmarks in the City

Yeni temamız 'Life in the City' ile mahallemizin sınırlarını aşıp şehrin tamamına bakıyoruz. Bir şehri tanıtırken kullandığımız temel kelimeler şunlardır: city centre (şehir merkezi), square (meydan), town hall (belediye binası), museum (müze), art gallery (sanat galerisi), stadium (stadyum), shopping mall (alışveriş merkezi), skyscraper (gökdelen), bridge (köprü), tower (kule), castle (kale), mosque (cami), old town (tarihî şehir merkezi) ve industrial area (sanayi bölgesi).

Simge yapıları tanıtırken şu kalıplar çok işe yarar: It is famous for... (... ile ünlüdür), It is located in / near... (... içinde / yakınında yer alır), It was built in... (... yılında inşa edildi) ve You can... (... yapabilirsiniz). Örneğin: 'Our city is famous for its old castle. It is located on a hill near the city centre. You can see the whole city from the top.' Burada 'was built' yapısını yalnızca kalıp olarak öğrenmek yeterlidir.

Şehri betimlerken sıfatlar da önemlidir: crowded (kalabalık), lively (canlı, hareketli), historic (tarihî), modern (modern), polluted (kirli), clean (temiz), busy (yoğun, işlek) ve peaceful (huzurlu). Önceki haftalarda öğrendiğimiz relative clauses burada da işe yarar: 'The square where people meet on Fridays is always lively.' / 'The museum which opened last year has a great science section.'

Getting Around: Public Transport in the City

Büyük şehirlerde günlük hayatın önemli bir parçası public transport (toplu taşıma) kullanmaktır. Ulaşım araçlarını anlatırken by edatı kullanılır: by bus (otobüsle), by metro / by underground (metroyla), by tram (tramvayla), by ferry (vapurla), by train (trenle), by taxi (taksiyle), by bike (bisikletle), by car (arabayla). Yürüyerek gitmek ise istisnadır: on foot denir. Aynı anlamı fiillerle de verebiliriz: 'I take the bus.' / 'She rides her bike.' / 'We walk to school.' / 'My dad drives to work.' Araca binmek için 'get on the bus / get in the taxi', inmek için 'get off the bus / get out of the taxi' kullanılır.

Ulaşım hakkında soru sorarken üç temel kalıp vardır. Yöntemi sormak için How do you get to...?: 'How do you get to school?' – 'I go by tram.' Süreyi sormak için How long does it take (to get to...)?: 'How long does it take to get to the airport?' – 'It takes about forty minutes by metro.' Mesafeyi sormak için How far is it (from... to...)?: 'How far is it from your house to the stadium?' – 'It's about three kilometres.' Kişiyi de eklemek istersek 'It takes me twenty minutes to walk to school.' diyebiliriz.

Toplu taşımayla ilgili diğer faydalı kelimeler: bus stop (otobüs durağı), metro station (metro istasyonu), ticket / travel card (bilet / ulaşım kartı), timetable (sefer saatleri çizelgesi), rush hour (iş çıkış ve giriş saatlerindeki yoğunluk), traffic jam (trafik sıkışıklığı), change (aktarma yapmak) ve miss the bus (otobüsü kaçırmak). 'Take the M1 line and change at the Central Station.' / 'Don't travel in rush hour; the buses are too crowded.' Bu cümlelerde önceki haftalardan öğrendiğimiz emir kipi ve too yapısının şehir hayatında nasıl kullanıldığını görüyoruz.

City or Countryside? Superlatives and As ... As

Önceki haftalarda iki şeyi karşılaştırırken comparatives kullanmıştık: 'The city is noisier than the village.' Kısa sıfatlarda the + sıfat + -est: small → the smallest, cheap → the cheapest. Sessiz harfle biten kısa sıfatlarda son harf ikizlenir: big → the biggest, hot → the hottest. -y ile bitenlerde y, i'ye döner: busy → the busiest, noisy → the noisiest. İki ve daha çok heceli uzun sıfatlarda the most + sıfat: crowded → the most crowded, expensive → the most expensive, beautiful → the most beautiful. Düzensiz biçimleri ezberlemek gerekir: good → better → the best, bad → worse → the worst, far → farther / further → the farthest / the furthest.

Superlative cümlelerinde çoğunlukla bir grup ya da yer belirtilir; yer için in, grup için of kullanılır: 'Istanbul is the most crowded city in Türkiye.' / 'This is the tallest building in our city.' / 'The metro is the fastest of all.' Kendi deneyimimizi anlatmak için 'the ... I have ever seen' gibi kalıplar da duyulabilir, ama bu düzeyde temel yapı yeterlidir. 'the' sözcüğünü unutmamak çok önemlidir: 'Ankara is the capital and one of the biggest cities in Türkiye.' Burada 'one of the + superlative + çoğul isim' kalıbını da görüyoruz.

İki şeyin eşit olduğunu anlatmak için as + sıfat + as kullanılır: 'The bus is as fast as the tram on this road.' (Bu yolda otobüs tramvay kadar hızlıdır.) Eşit olmadığını anlatmak için not as + sıfat + as kullanılır ve bu yapı comparative ile aynı anlamı daha yumuşak biçimde verir: 'The village isn't as noisy as the city.' = 'The village is quieter than the city.' Şehir ve köy hayatını karşılaştırırken bu yapılarla dengeli görüşler kurabiliriz: 'Life in the city is more exciting, but it isn't as peaceful as life in the countryside. The countryside has the cleanest air, but the city has the best hospitals and universities.' Dikkat: as ... as yapısında sıfat yalın kalır; 'as bigger as' yanlıştır.

Cities of the Future: Will and Be Going To

Şehirler sürekli değişir: yeni metro hatları açılır, parklar yapılır, eski binalar yenilenir. Şehirlerin geleceği hakkında konuşurken iki farklı gelecek yapısı kullanırız. Will + V1 fikre, düşünceye ve tahmine dayalı geleceği anlatır; genellikle 'I think, I believe, probably, maybe, in the future, in 2050' gibi ifadelerle kullanılır: 'I think there will be more electric buses in the future.' / 'People probably won't use petrol cars in 2050.' Olumsuzu won't (will not), sorusu Will + özne + V1? biçimindedir: 'Will cities have flying taxis?' 'will' ayrıca konuşma anında verilen kararlar ve teklifler için de kullanılır: 'The bag is heavy. – Don't worry, I'll carry it.'

Be going to + V1 (am / is / are going to) ise önceden düşünülmüş planları ve niyetleri anlatır: 'The municipality is going to open a new bike lane next year.' / 'We are going to visit the science museum on Saturday; we've already bought the tickets.' Bir de şu anda gördüğümüz bir kanıta dayanan tahminler için kullanılır: 'Look at all those cars on the bridge! We're going to be late.' / 'The sky is very dark. It's going to rain.'

I believe smart traffic lights will reduce traffic jams.' / 'Our school is going to put recycling bins in every classroom.' Geçen hafta öğrendiğimiz zero conditional ile de bağ kurabiliriz: 'If more people use public transport, there is less air pollution.'

Writing a Short City Guide About Your Hometown

Girişte Present Simple ve 'famous for' kullanılır: 'Our city is in the centre of Türkiye. It is famous for its historic houses.' Gezilecek yerlerde superlatives ve relative clauses anlatımı zenginleştirir: 'The most beautiful place is the old town, where you can see colourful wooden houses.' Ulaşım bölümünde 'by tram', 'on foot' ve 'It takes...' kalıpları gelir: 'It takes only ten minutes by tram to get to the city centre.' İpuçları bölümünde emir kipi, should ve 'Don't miss...' (... kaçırmayın) kalıbı kullanılır: 'Don't miss the boat tour on the river.' / 'You should visit in spring because the weather is the best.' Şehrin geleceğine dair bir cümle de will ya da going to ile eklenebilir.

İyi bir metinde cümleler birbirine bağlaçlarla (linking words) bağlanır. Ek bilgi için and, also, in addition: 'The city has a great science museum. In addition, there is a big zoo.' Zıtlık için but, however: 'The city centre is lively. However, it can be crowded at weekends.' Neden için because, sonuç için so: 'The trams are cheap and fast, so most visitors use them.' 'However' ve 'In addition' genellikle cümle başında gelir ve arkasından virgül alır; 'also' ise genellikle fiilden önce ya da 'be' fiilinden sonra yer alır: 'You can also take a boat tour.'

(c) Mert üçüncü tekil olduğu için fiil -s alır: 'Mert takes the metro to the city centre and changes at the Central Station. It takes him thirty minutes.' Kontrol: 'by foot' yazılmamalı; 'It takes' kalıbında özne 'it' olmalıdır.

  4. Örnek 4Üç yerleşim yeri hakkında bilgiler: Gölköy: population 2,000, 1 park, very quiet. Yeşiltepe: population 50,000, 5 parks, quite noisy. Merkezkent: population 900,000, 30 parks, very noisy. Bu bilgilere göre (a) en büyük, (b) en sessiz yeri superlative ile belirtiniz; (c) en çok parka sahip yeri yazınız; (d) Yeşiltepe ile Merkezkent'i not as ... as ile karşılaştırınız.

    Cevabı göster

    (a) Üç yer karşılaştırıldığı için superlative; big son harf ikizlenir: 'Merkezkent is the biggest of the three.' (b) quiet tek hecelidir: the quietest → 'Gölköy is the quietest place.' (c) Miktar için 'the most + isim': 'Merkezkent has the most parks.' (d) Yeşiltepe daha küçük ve daha az gürültülüdür: 'Yeşiltepe isn't as big as Merkezkent.' / 'Yeşiltepe isn't as noisy as Merkezkent.' Kontrol: 'the' sözcüğü superlative'den önce zorunludur; as ... as içinde sıfat yalın kalır (as big as, as bigger as değil).
