Bu hafta

Unit 5: The Internet konusunun üçüncü haftasındayız. Önceki haftalarda internet kelimelerini, teklifleri kabul edip reddetmeyi ve internet alışkanlıklarımızı anlatmayı öğrendik. Bu hafta bu bilgileri gerçek hayatta kullanmaya odaklanıyoruz: kısa konuşmaları dinleyip genel anlamı (gist) yakalayacak, e-posta ve ek dosyalarla (attachments) çalışacak, çevrim içi buluşmalar için öneride bulunacak (Why don't we...? / How about...?) ve bahanelerimizi sebepleriyle (have to, because) anlatacağız.

1. Listening for Gist and Key Phrases in Online Conversations

Gist soruları genellikle şöyledir: 'What are the speakers talking about?' (Konuşmacılar ne hakkında konuşuyor?), 'Does Ali accept the offer?' (Ali teklifi kabul ediyor mu?), 'Why is Elif calling?' (Elif neden arıyor?). İlk dinlemede bilmediğimiz kelimelere takılırsak konuşmanın akışını kaçırırız; bu yüzden önce genel resmi görmeye çalışırız.

Genel anlamı hızlıca yakalamanın en kolay yolu key phrases (anahtar ifadeler) tanımaktır. Bir konuşmada 'Would you like to join our WhatsApp group?' duyduğumuzda bunun bir teklif (offer) olduğunu anlarız. Arkasından 'Yes, sure.' ya da 'That sounds great.' geliyorsa teklif kabul edilmiştir; 'No, thanks. I am really busy.' ya da 'I'm sorry, but I can't.' geliyorsa reddedilmiştir. 'What do you mean? Do you mean the Internet connection?' cümlesi ise konuşmacının bir şeyi tam anlamadığını ve açıklama istediğini (asking for clarification) gösterir.

Kısa bir örnek dinleyelim: Ece: 'Hi Mert! Would you like to watch the film online with us tonight?' Mert: 'I'd love to, but I can't. I have to finish my project.' Bu konuşmanın gist'i şudur: Ece, Mert'i birlikte çevrim içi film izlemeye davet ediyor; Mert daveti kibarca reddediyor. Specific information ise Mert'in bahanesidir: projesini bitirmek zorundadır.

2. E-mails and Attachments: Writing, Sending and Answering Messages

E-postayla ilgili temel fiiller şunlardır: send (göndermek), receive (almak), reply (cevaplamak), reply all (tümünü yanıtlamak), forward (başka birine iletmek), delete (silmek) ve download (ek dosyayı bilgisayara indirmek). Gelen e-postalar inbox (gelen kutusu) içinde toplanır; istenmeyen reklam e-postaları ise spam klasörüne düşer. Örnek cümleler: 'I'm sending our project as an attachment.' (Projemizi ek olarak gönderiyorum.), 'I can't open the attachment. Can you send it again?' (Eki açamıyorum. Tekrar gönderebilir misin?), 'Please reply to this e-mail before Friday.'

Hi Berk, I'm sending the slides as an attachment. Please download them and check the pictures. Reply to me before Thursday, please. Best wishes, Ada' Güvenlik açısından, tanımadığımız kişilerden gelen ekleri indirmemeli ve şüpheli e-postaları silmeliyiz.

3. Making Suggestions and Arranging Online Meetings

Arkadaşlarımızla çevrim içi bir etkinlik planlarken öneride bulunuruz. İngilizcede en sık kullanılan öneri kalıpları şunlardır: Why don't we + V1? ('Why don't we chat online at two o'clock?' — Saat ikide çevrim içi sohbet edelim mi?), Let's + V1 ('Let's make a video call.' — Hadi görüntülü arama yapalım.), Shall we + V1? ('Shall we meet online after dinner?' — Akşam yemeğinden sonra çevrim içi buluşalım mı?) ve How about + V-ing? ('How about joining the online quiz?' — Çevrim içi bilgi yarışmasına katılmaya ne dersin?). Birini bir şeye davet ederken ise Would you like to + V1? kalıbını kullanırız: 'Would you like to join our WhatsApp group?'

Önerilere olumlu cevap vermek için 'Good idea!' (İyi fikir!), 'That sounds great!' (Kulağa harika geliyor!), 'Sure, why not?' (Tabii, neden olmasın?) ve 'OK. See you online at two.' (Tamam, saat ikide çevrim içi görüşürüz.) diyebiliriz. Olumsuz cevap için 'I'm sorry, but I can't.', 'I'd love to, but I'm really busy.' ve 'No, thanks. Maybe next time.' kullanılır. Buluşmanın ayrıntılarını netleştirmek için de sorular sorarız: 'What time?' — 'At two o'clock.', 'Where? On which app?' — 'In our class group.', 'What do you want to talk about?' — 'I want to tell you something important.'

Arda: 'Why don't we chat online at two o'clock? I want to tell you something important.' Duru: 'I'm sorry, but I can't. My internet is broken.' Arda: 'What do you mean? Do you mean the Internet connection?' Duru: 'Yes. It isn't working properly.' Arda: 'Oh, I see. How about talking on the phone, then?' Duru: 'That sounds great!'

4. Giving Reasons for Excuses: Have to, Need to and Because

Kibar bir ret genellikle dört parçadan oluşur: 1) Regret (üzüntü bildirme): 'I'm sorry,' / 'I'd love to,'; 2) Refusal (ret): 'but I can't.'; 3) Reason (sebep, bahane): 'I have to study for my exam.'; 4) Alternative (alternatif öneri): 'How about tomorrow?' / 'Maybe another time.' Bu dört parçayı birleştirdiğimizde şu cümle ortaya çıkar: 'I'm sorry, but I can't. I have to study for my exam. How about tomorrow?' (Üzgünüm ama yapamam. Sınavıma çalışmak zorundayım. Yarına ne dersin?)

Bahanemizi anlatırken birkaç basit yapı kullanırız. have to / has to + V1 (-mek zorunda olmak): 'I have to visit my grandmother.', 'She has to finish her homework.' need to + V1 (-mesi gerekmek): 'I need to help my mother this evening.' because (çünkü) ile ret ve sebebi tek cümlede birleştirebiliriz: 'I can't join the video call because my laptop is broken.' Bazen durumu anlatan basit bir cümle de yeterlidir: 'I am really busy.', 'I don't feel well.', 'I have a lot of homework.'

İnternet konusunda en sık kullanılan bahaneler teknik sorunlarla ilgilidir: 'My internet is broken.' (İnternetim bozuk.), 'The connection isn't working properly.' (Bağlantı düzgün çalışmıyor.), 'My computer is very slow.' (Bilgisayarım çok yavaş.), 'My phone's battery is low.' (Telefonumun şarjı az.), 'I forgot my password, so I can't log in.' (Şifremi unuttum, bu yüzden giriş yapamıyorum.) Karşımızdaki kişi bahanemizi duyduğunda ona anlayışla cevap verir: 'That's OK.' (Sorun değil.), 'No problem. Maybe next time.' (Problem değil, belki bir dahaki sefere.), 'Never mind.' (Boş ver, önemli değil.)

5. Reading Real-Life Internet Texts: Sign-Up Forms, Notifications and Error Messages

İnternette her gün kısa ama önemli metinlerle karşılaşırız: sign-up forms (kayıt formları), notifications (bildirimler) ve error messages (hata mesajları). Bu metinleri okurken amacımız genellikle specific information (belirli bilgi) bulmaktır; bu yüzden metni tararız (scanning). Bir kayıt formunda şu alanlar bulunur: username (kullanıcı adı), e-mail address (e-posta adresi), password (şifre), confirm password (şifreyi tekrar girerek onayla), date of birth (doğum tarihi) ve 'I agree to the terms.' Hesabı zaten olanlar için ekranda 'Already have an account? Log in.' (Zaten hesabın var mı? Giriş yap.) yazar.

Bildirimler bize yeni bir şey olduğunu haber verir: 'You have 3 new messages.' (3 yeni mesajın var.), 'Ece commented on your photo.' (Ece fotoğrafına yorum yaptı.), 'Your download is complete.' (İndirme işlemin tamamlandı.), 'Your account is ready. Please confirm your e-mail.' (Hesabın hazır. Lütfen e-postanı onayla.) Hata mesajları ise bir sorun olduğunu söyler: 'No Internet connection.' (İnternet bağlantısı yok.), 'Wrong password. Please try again.' (Yanlış şifre. Lütfen tekrar dene.), 'Page not found.' (Sayfa bulunamadı.), 'The file is too large to upload.'

İkinci sorunun cevabı genellikle bir emir cümlesidir (imperative): try again (tekrar dene), check your Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi'ını kontrol et), confirm your e-mail (e-postanı onayla). Örneğin ekranda 'Upload failed. The file is too large. Maximum size: 10 MB.' yazıyorsa ve soru 'Why can't the user upload the file?' ise cevap 'Because the file is too large.' olur; kullanıcının yapması gereken ise 10 MB'tan küçük bir dosya yüklemektir. Sayılara (10 MB, 3 messages, 2 attempts) ve 'too' (çok, fazla), 'wrong' (yanlış), 'not' (değil) gibi kelimelere dikkat etmek doğru bilgiyi bulmamızı sağlar.

6. The Internet: Advantages, Disadvantages and Sharing Opinions

İnternet hakkında bilgi alışverişi yapmak (exchanging information) yalnızca alışkanlıklarımızı anlatmak değildir; internetin iyi ve kötü yanları hakkında fikirlerimizi de paylaşırız. Advantages (avantajlar, faydalar) şunlardır: Bilgiye hızlıca ulaşırız ('We can find information quickly.'), uzaktaki akrabalarımızla ve arkadaşlarımızla iletişim kurarız ('We can chat with our relatives abroad.'), evden çevrim içi derslere katılırız ('We can take online lessons.'), e-book, müzik ve video indiririz. Ayrıca internet zaman kazandırır: 'Online shopping saves time.' (Çevrim içi alışveriş zaman kazandırır.)

İnternetin disadvantages (dezavantajlar, zararlar) yanları da vardır. Bazı insanlar internete bağımlı hâle gelir: 'Some people are addicted to the Internet.' Ekran başında çok fazla zaman geçirmek gözlerimize ve uykumuza zarar verir: 'Too much screen time is bad for our eyes.' İnternetteki bütün bilgiler doğru değildir: 'Some news on the Internet is fake.' (İnternetteki bazı haberler yalandır.) Bazı kullanıcılar başkalarına kaba mesajlar göndererek cyberbullying (siber zorbalık) yapar. Ayrıca bazı insanlar yüz yüze daha az konuşur: 'People spend less time face to face.'

Fikirlerimizi söylerken şu ifadeleri kullanırız: 'I think...' (Bence...), 'In my opinion...' (Benim fikrime göre...), 'I agree with you.' (Sana katılıyorum.), 'I don't agree, because...' (Katılmıyorum, çünkü...), 'You're right, but...' (Haklısın ama...), 'What do you think about online lessons?' (Çevrim içi dersler hakkında ne düşünüyorsun?) Kısa bir örnek: Kaan: 'I think the Internet is very useful. We can learn new things every day.' Zehra: 'You're right, but some information online is fake, so we should check it.' Kaan: 'I agree with you.' Görüldüğü gibi 'but' zıt bir fikir eklerken, 'so' bir sonuç bildirir.

  • Gist için dinleme: İlk dinlemede her kelimeye takılmadan 'Kim konuşuyor, konu ne, teklif kabul mü ediliyor reddediliyor mu?' sorularına cevap ararız; 'Would you like...?', 'That sounds great!', 'Sorry, but I can't.' gibi anahtar ifadeler konuşmanın yönünü gösterir.
  • Öneri kalıpları: Why don't we + V1?, Let's + V1, Shall we + V1? ve How about + V-ing? kalıplarıyla çevrim içi buluşma ve etkinlik önerir; 'Good idea!', 'Sure, why not?' ya da 'Sorry, but I can't.' ile cevap veririz.
  • Kibar ret formülü: Üzüntü (I'm sorry / I'd love to) + ret (but I can't) + sebep (I have to study / my internet is broken) + alternatif öneri (How about tomorrow?) sırasıyla kurulan cevap, kaba bir 'No.' yerine kullanılır.
  • Gerçek internet metinleri: Kayıt formlarındaki alanları (username, password, confirm password), bildirimleri (You have 3 new messages.) ve hata mesajlarını (No Internet connection., Wrong password.) tarayarak (scanning) gereken bilgiyi bulur ve mesajın bizden ne yapmamızı istediğini anlarız.
  • Fikir alışverişi: İnternetin avantajlarını (hızlı bilgi, uzaktakilerle iletişim, çevrim içi dersler) ve dezavantajlarını (bağımlılık, yalan haber, siber zorbalık) 'I think...', 'In my opinion...', 'I agree / I don't agree' ifadeleriyle tartışırız.
